  • Analysis finds iPad Pro's LiDAR Scanner not ready for photo applications, cameras inferior...

As for the new LiDAR Scanner, de With, like others, notes the sensor's resolution is likely inadequate for photo enhancement applications, at least at this time. Data gleaned from the system is good for resolving larger objects at room scale, but likely not detailed enough to augment existing technologies like Portrait Mode, for example.

This is something AppleInsider seems to struggle to understand. It was pointed out by multiple outlets early on that the dot projection from the LiDAR scanner wasn’t suitable for portrait photography, as the resolution of the projections is too low. You need many more dots much closer together in order to generate a depth map of a face compared to a room.

Despite this, as recently as April 11 AppleInsider’s own Andrew O’Hara wrote:

“iPad Pro now has the LiDAR scanner which is used explicitly for capturing depth-based information. This is great for AR but also beneficial to be utilized for portrait mode that requires that depth information. So not only could Apple have had an opportunity to bring Portrait Mode to iPad with the dual-camera setup, but it could have greatly improved it over the current implementation.”

There seems to be general lack of awareness around LiDAR resolution on the AppleInsider team.

  • Apple engineers reportedly testing new prototype AirPower with A11 processor

Is there a reason leaked images are always so blurry? It’s really hard to take a blurry photo with a smartphone these days. You have to shake the device pretty aggressively whilst pressing the shutter button.

  • Editorial: The 2020 iPad Pro may not be what Apple originally intended

Furthermore, iPad Pro now has the LiDAR scanner which is used explicitly for capturing depth-based information. This is great for AR but also beneficial to be utilized for portrait mode that requires that depth information.

So not only could Apple have had an opportunity to bring Portrait Mode to iPad with the dual-camera setup, but it could have greatly improved it over the current implementation.

Nope. The LiDAR scanner in the iPad Pro is useless for Portrait mode. The dot projections are nowhere near close enough to each other to be able to aid depth mapping a human face; they are designed to project several meters and cover an entire area of a room.

The lack of Portrait mode is notable, but when discussing its absence LiDAR is a red herring.

  • Computing would be totally different had Apple not been formed 49 years ago, today

It's impossible not to now see his leaving as a mistake, given Apple's overwhelming success.”

Sure, if your overriding priority in life is amassing wealth. I wonder if Ron Wayne agrees that it’s impossible not to see it as a mistake. Let’s ask.

“Amongst the countless times he's been asked about his departure, Ron Wayne said in 2013 that he had no regrets at all.”

    There we go.

  • Apple confirms customers unable to pick up Apple Store repairs until outlets reopen

Why can’t they ship the customer their devices? Seems like the store manager could get it done in an hour or two.  There’s probably not that much stuff, if they put any effort in warning them.

For corp. customers the devices probably weren’t picked up because they are also closed.  A phone call could confirm that...
In some cities that would literally be illegal.  Non-essential businesses in those areas are closed under emergency orders and violators can be arrested.  Obviously, if Apple wanted to flout the law they could sneak someone into the building and ship out these items, but that would be a stupid thing to do.
The closures and the two day pickup window were both before the emergency orders. They shuttered their doors voluntarily (and rightly so), but left devices inside the buildings.

    That was on Apple.
