  • Apple's MagSafe Duo Charger approved by FCC

Just saw Tech Crunch’s review. What a disappointment. Not even a proper hinge, just two halves held together by cheap flimsy rubber. You can even see the laminated seal around the edge of the product. This has been made using the most inexpensive production methods.

I was expecting something premium for the price. This is like a cheap knockoff.

  • Apple removes RSS reader apps from Chinese App Store

The absolute gall of the wording Apple uses in that email is disgraceful. Rather than be honest about it and say that the Chinese government have forced Apple to remove these apps, Apple goes out of their way to word the email as though the developer has broken a law.

“Check with a lawyer” and “we know this stuff is complicated”? Get to hell. This is the most condescending phraseology Apple could have chosen to use.

This is categorically not the fault of developers and Apple damn well knows that.

  • Apple may launch its own web-based search engine

Beyond the technology in this proposition, I have to wonder about the business model.  Apple is apparently receiving billions of dollars from Google to use their search engine by default.  Why would Apple want to stop that revenue stream?  Further, does Apple really want to get into the advertising business?  One of the reasons we trust Apple today is precisely because their business model doesn't depend on them harvesting our information to monetize with advertisers as Google does.   The alternative is to have an unpaid service like Maps, but not only would that cost money to run such a service, but Apple would be losing revenue from Google in the process.  None of this makes much sense to me from a business model perspective.
I suspect if they did get into web based search their advertising model would look similar to how it does on the App Store, where they are already in the advertising business.

In other words, no information harvesting, just classic paid-for sponsored search terms. Similar in many ways to DuckDuckGo's model, which has proven well for them.

It will indeed be interesting to see if Apple is prepared to drop the significant payment they receive from Google though. A test of their privacy focused values vs. lucrative revenue streams...

  • Review: VOCOlinc PureFlow is the only HomeKit air purifier you need

Crikey that thing looks hideous. And if the display is OLED why did they choose to mimic the appearance of an old LED calculator for the numbers? They could have gone with a much friendlier font.

It would be good to see a comparison against the competition including noise level and also the volume of air filtered (say, per hour).

  • Tim Cook's leadership style has 'reshaped how Apple staff work and think'

How unusual. Lots of things in the profile which jump out as a little odd. Not least of all the idea that Cook has a paper-based meeting agenda that he flips the pages on.

Also odd is the assertion that he’s detail oriented, at a time when software quality has come under question. Perhaps detail oriented only as far as supply chain mechanics goes (which would explain how the CEO of the largest technology firm on the planet found out about 25 misdirected computers. As an aside, why is Apple shipping computers in units of 25?!)

As for the apparent fact that Apple “helped arrange calls four phone people it said could speak to areas of importance to Mr. Cook” [sic], I find that extraordinary. Apple almost exclusively no-comments just about everything, so the idea that they would help facilitate quotes for an exec profile that wasn’t an Apple-sanctioned puff piece is very out of character for the company.

All in all a slightly odd but nonetheless curious piece.
