  • Apple's push for 3D will require voxel map of the world, claims VR evangelist

Google Earth VR is pretty addictive. It is so interesting to explore locations that have voxel maps. Google already has much of the planet scanned in 3D. The app give the viewer a sort of gods eye view of the planet as everything is shrunk down to look like a table top model (there is a realistic scale too which is also worth trying). This would be a great area for Apple to get into as they already have 3D scans of many cities. Currently they do not allow developers to use them in VR mode sadly but this seems to be a direction they are going in.

  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 chip costs $699 to repair without AppleCare+

Note that Apple's keyboard cover for the iPad Pro does not protect the corners if it is dropped. A corner strike is how screens get broken (take it from personal experience). You should aways have some soft rubber protection around the corners of an iPad (or iPhone). Apple designs is products for how things look now how they work so even its $300 keyboard cover fails to protect the iPad Pro corners.

  • Here's when and where Apple will alert you to an AirTag used for stalking

My AirTag review (as of about a minute of use):
Looks great. Smaller than I thought.
Too heavy for use on a drone due to the metal construction.
There are no flat surfaces so it can't be mounted to another flat surface with adhesive.
Set up was super easy. You just pull the cover off and hold it near your iPhone and everything is automatic.
In fact set up was so easy that Tile absolutely has a case. It would be impossible to implement a similar UI without support from iOS that they do not have access to.
On Bluetooth it shows up as connectable but without a name and no additional information.
Odd behavior: It advertises itself at full power but when you connect to it, the signal strength varies greatly over time even with both the phone and AirTag right next to each other. This appears to be intentional on Apple's part. However it is the only device which has this pattern of behavior which makes it detectable as an AirTag. Not sure if this is what Apple intended.
When you open up the package how do you turn them on?
The stretchy plastic wrapper has a little bit tucked inside the AirTag. When you pull it out, the battery makes contact and it turns on. Then you just hold it close to your iPhone and a UI will magically pop up to let you register it. Sometimes Apple really nails it with the UI and this is one of those times.

  • Apple partners with Walgreens to allow staff to get vaccinated on-campus

The USPTO has really failed at its mission to disallow obvious patents. Patents should be for non-obvious working inventions not something obvious like "you can use a smart device to do something you were doing with a pencil and paper".

  • Parallels Desktop 16.5 released with native Apple Silicon support

I am running Windows ARM on an Apple Silicon Mac Mini. It's ... interesting. Even Microsoft's own software development tool Visual Studio says it is not compatible with Windows ARM. However the OS does run but is noticeably slow doing some fairly basic tasks. It is so early in development that when there is an update, a lot of the time you have to re-install the entire OS to get it to work otherwise you get a cryptic error code. A VM is the only way to use the OS currently as reinstalling it is fairly painless that way.

To be fair, this mess is not Parallels fault. They have done what they can. Now it is up to Microsoft to fully support ARM including the special instructions Apple built into Apple Silicon that speed performance of x86 emulation which are used in Rosetta. Microsoft is not moving fast enough to develop Windows ARM. There have been only a few updates in the past six months and none of them made any noticeable difference in the performance. Hopefully Microsoft wakes up soon and realizes that they will lose the game if they don't fully support ARM.
