  • Analysis: Apple not likely to enter the foldable market before 2027

I’ve seen some folding androids - the tech looks neat but I still don’t see much practical use.
If I didn't know better, I would think a folding phone would be good from the perspective of protecting the screen. The irony is that it's worse.

And I guess there are situations in which having your phone be half its height but twice the thickness might be beneficial. Maybe that's a better fit to some pockets.

But to the extent that any benefits exist, or might exist, they just don't outweigh the costs.

  • New Magic Mouse said to fix everything that's been wrong with it for 15 years

The charging port location is about the least worst thing about it for me, I hope they redesign it from every atom up.

It feels weird having to hover a finger to properly right click, and there's no simultaneous left/right click which is a bit more esoteric but some apps can use.

The sensor and wireless stack are just abysmal now though, they never updated it in all the refreshes from the 11 year old sensor, it feels bad and skippy and once you use a good mouse you realize you weren't bad at aiming at fine targets, the mouse was. Check Rtings on the Magic Mouse 2 if you think that's dramatic.

Agreed, and I'd like them to redesign it with gaming in mind. While I love the Magic Trackpad for most uses, it's a bad option for first person shooter style games, and the Magic Mouse also is pretty bad for that purpose.

While it's true that the current Mac user base might not be hugely into games (due to self-selection bias), improving gaming is probably the number one most important thing for Apple to do in order to expand Mac marketshare. They've already done a lot with the M-series chips, Metal, and porting tools, but a pretty easily addressed barrier is the gaming ergonomics of the pointing device.

  • Tim Cook rumored to be meeting with Donald Trump for dinner on Friday

I’m guessing cook will get an exemption from tariffs but I’m curious to see what he has to do in return. I’ll guess Apple commits to assembling their AI servers (for internal use) in the US using chips made in AZ.

  • Mac representation at Game Awards caps off a good year for macOS gaming

It seems like Apple has made good progress on the technological side. The hardware and software is there.

But I'm not sure this is a 'if we build it, they will come' kind of situation. I think Apple needs to do more to help make the economics of game development pay for developers. There are a lot of ways to do that (zero interest rate loans, direct engineering support with porting, pay for porting cost and share profit, etc), but I suspect something like that is needed.

Of course, building their own AAA game studio, analogous to their AAA video content for Apple TV+, would be another option. Imagine if there were a game version of Silo -- that could be pretty cool.

I hate camera bumps — they are so ugly!

    But also….

i want the best possible camera in my phone!

If apple were a truly innovative company they would come up with their own laws of physics that would allow me to have everything I want.
Good one, Blastdoor! I really enjoyed the post. The first three sentences are the structure for half the posts on AI--some form of "I hate THIS, but I also want what THIS allows me to have." And then, oblivious to the laws of physics or the current state of the art in tech, they'll usually conclude with something like, "Apple sucks now and Steve would never have allowed this."
I'm just happy the sarcasm was understood without me having to add [/s] :-)
