  • New MacBook Pro arrives with M4 Pro, M4 Max, and a black colorway

Is it just me or does the M4 Max feels like a less improvement. Maybe it's because M4 Pro took such a leap I was expecting M4 max to become a 16 and 18 CPU with maybe 32 and 42 GPU cores but it remains the same on core counts as M3 Max......I think I got my hopes up a bit too much
Yeah, the M4 Pro was definitely a bigger improvement over the M3 Pro. But part of that is because the M3 Pro wasn't much better than the M2 Pro. So, comparing both M4 Pro and Max to their M2 counterparts, they are similarly large improvements. It's just that for Max, more of that improvement happened during the M3 generation while for Pro more of the improvement happened during the M4 generation.

  • Here we go again - Apple again rumored to buy Intel

Apple has a history of paying for all the capital equipment in a factory but not necessarily owning or managing the factory. I seem to recall Apple wanting to do that with TSMC, but TSMC declined the offer because they believed (correctly) they that they could pay for the equipment themselves. And they didn’t want to be constrained in how they used that equipment.

So the version of this story that makes sense to me is that Intel might do the deal TSMC would not. Maybe Apple buys all that expensive ASML equipment and Intel owns the building and manages the employees. For a few years that equipment is used exclusively for making apple products. Maybe Apple technically leases the equipment to Intel. Once Apple moves on to the next generation of equipment, they let Intel use the equipment to fab for other companies (either continuing to collect lease payments or just selling the equipment to Intel.

    Or some variation on that.

But I don’t see Apple buying legacy Intel fabs that currently only make Intel chips (which is most Intel fabs). I could see Apple being interested in hiring some Intel employees, but they could just recruit them. I could also see Apple wanting to buy some Intel patents, but they could just buy them.

Better to do small separate deals to avoid regulator scrutiny, too.

  • A smaller Mac mini brings big problems for server farms and accessory makers

I would happily sell my m2 pro mini to anyone who wants it and I’ll go buy the m4 pro version.

Mine is the 12 core version with 32GB of RAM.

  • New Mac mini arrives with redesign, powerful M4 & M4 Pro processors, more USB-C

Ten performance cores is way beyond what I was expecting. That’s huge. The m4 pro should be more than twice as fast as the m4 on multithreaded workloads. At least for CPU, this could be close to an M2 Ultra
