  • Apple hits 18 gigawatts of clean energy in its environmental push

Apple and its suppliers now use more than 18 gigawatts of clean energy.

This is kind of a strange statement, because a watt is a measure of the rate of flow, like miles per hour. Saying you used 18 gigawatts is like saying you traveled a distance of 60 mph. Without knowing time, we don’t know how much energy was actually used or miles traveled.

ill hazard a guess that what’s meant here is that Apple used the energy generated by clean energy sources which, at theoretical peak utilization, can put out 18 gigawatts. Kind of like saying I used 120mph because the car I drove theoretically maxes out at 120mph. But that tells you nothing about how fast I actually went or how far I traveled.

The more meaningful numbers are — how many megawatt-hours of electricity did Apple and their suppliers use and what percentage of that came from renewable sources.

How many years until Apple actually has decent AI though? They're not really a leader right now. I'd wait until then to buy a current computer that could actually take advantage of AI advancements.
Too many folks limit the meaning of AI to LLMs and chatbots, where Apple may not have a significant presence (despite being the first). Apple already uses AI in many areas, and there are many more areas where AI will be used going forward.  IMHO, it is 'hold on to your seat time.'  I am definitely holding on to my AAPL shares.

I think AAPL will likely benefit from AI due to a combination of apple silicon and Apple’s ability to make new technology more accessible and useful.

the threat to AAPL is Xi. If he starts a war over Taiwan, AAPL is toast. Even if it’s not a shooting war, but just an embargo or some other extreme bullying/provocation that falls short of war, it will be bad for AAPL.

  • TSMC 2nm processor won't arrive until iPhone 17 Pro

Every time TSMC comes out with a new process people are overly optimistic about when it will show up in Apple products. It’s always a year later than optimists think.

I’m very interested to see if Intel gets 20A chips out this year. If they do, they could really take the wind out of Qualcomm’s sails and greatly reduce the advantage of Apple silicon in the PC space.

  • Apple's next big thing could be a home robot

    Well, maybe.

There are things I do around the house that, in principle, an AI-enabled robot could learn and replicate, like filling and emptying the dishwasher, vacuuming, taking out the trash, etc. In some ways that would be easier than an autonomous vehicle because the stakes of mistakes are lower -- breaking a dish isn't as bad as running over a pedestrian. And with an aging/shrinking population more domestic help will be needed.

But... humans are very well adapted to the context in which humans operate, and creating a robot that can add value in that context will be very hard -- even harder to do it cost effectively. With enough time and investment it could be done, I suppose, but I bet this is more than 10 years away.

To my way of thinking the more promising context for developing robots is space exploration. Humans are not well adapted to space *at all*. Space is hard on everything, but robots might be better suited for it than humans, if for no other reason than they are expendable (the fact that they don't need to breathe is pretty nice, though). So I suspect SpaceX is better positioned to develop robots than Apple. Too bad SpaceX is owned by Elon Musk.

  • Apple employees urge management to act on Gaza conflict

Interesting. No worries about the fighting in Ukraine?
Or any other conflicts around the world?

Perhaps this is because of a different pace. At the end of the year, death toll in Ukraine was around 9.700 people after these years, while in Gaza it's over 30.000 since October. Civilians x soldiers ratio also differs. Hard to judge...
Maybe you have a different Ukraine in mind? Hundreds of thousands have died.
