  • Amazon slashing 9,000 more jobs in fresh round of layoffs

rant from a 73 year old curmudgeon.
Oh look, somebody who is already retired, probably has an actual pension, almost certainly owns a house that would now sell for 10x+ what they paid for it, and spent most of their working life getting reasonable raises and being paid somewhat close to fairly ranting about "those darn millennials".

Knock it the fuck off.  Wages haven't even kept up with CPI inflation, let alone college and housing inflation.  You had advantages that millennials never will, you had advantages that us X-ers never did.  "Trade" jobs are underpaid too, and don't have the pensions, benefits, and job stability they once did, and they'll still wreck your body by the time you're 50.

You're exactly the kind of boomer people are referring to when they say "Ok, boomer."

  • Is Apple about to announce a 'Broadcast' App?

    Ugh.

Developers:  THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT RELEASE ON THE APPLE APP STORE - or at the very least not exclusively there.

Get a website, they're cheap.  Collect money with something like Square or PayPal, they're expensive at 2.7-ish % but nowhere close to Apple's 30% highway robbery.

And people like me who WILL NOT support Apple's extortion and DRM might buy your app instead of looking for alternatives that we don't have to install through that stupid app store.

  • New 24-inch iMac in production testing, but won't ship until late 2023

“ get rid of the brick?   I guess that means the power supply.  If so,  that is not happening.  LOL you can’t cram a 143 watt power supply into that super thin device.  Also,  regarding the screen size,  it’s actually 23.5 inches on Apple’s own web page specs.  it’s a beautiful device, tempting despite the smallish screen.

The brick is stupid and incredibly annoying.  I just installed two today, and replaced 3 other iMacs with minis and 27" LG screens.  The iMacs (in local university color) went on the front desks where they are customer facing and I could hide the stupid bricks under the desk.  The minis with cheap (but actually really nice) 4k screens went to back office machines that would have been 27" iMacs, but there's no such thing now.  Apple probably left at least $4k on the table because they couldn't be bothered to make a big screen iMac.

And NOBODY cares about "super thin" in a desktop computer.  Can't fit the power supply?  MAKE IT THICKER.  And don't get me started on the stupid ethernet port in the brick.  Seriously stupid.  "But you don't have to have an ethernet cable on the desk."  YES, I DO.  I have to have an ethernet cable going up to the phone, then another one going back under the desk from the phone to the stupid brick.  The brick that's now in the floor where at some point somebody is going to kick it.

  • If both your iPhone and passcode get stolen, you're in deep trouble

Apple REALLY needs to implement two factor authentication.

And I've been saying that since Touch ID came out.  It's such an obvious thing, require a fingerprint AND a passcode, not just one or the other.  The code to implement it would be absolutely trivial for Apple.  And they're too stupid to do it.

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max camera bump could go on a diet

You know what would be really cool?  NO camera bump.

Just make the phone thicker.  We're going to do it with a case anyway, might as well not have the ridiculous looking camera bump.
