  • Apple moves further into finance with 'virtual cards' in iOS 16

Discover used to have a nice virtual card feature.  You could generate virtual card numbers to use for online/phone transactions.  Once a card number was used for a given payment, it would only ever work at the same vendor, if the card number was stolen it was worthless for transactions anywhere else.  If it was for a recurring service that you wanted to cancel, you could delete the number and it would stop working.

They discontinued it years ago.  I was not happy.

  • Simply Mac bankruptcy: Who to call, what happened, and why

Makes me think either Apple supports these partners more or build more Apple Stores.

Partners closing don’t help Apple in any way unless Apple replaces them.

Apple does not care AT ALL.

They're trying to make it impossible to operate as an authorized reseller or repair provider.  The only way to survive long term at this point is to go unauthorized.  The Apple store repair price including labor is typically identical to the part cost for authorized repair providers.  For dealers, the margin on a lower end Mac can be under the credit card percentage.  Warranty repair rates have been cut.

You have to drive farther to an Apple store?  Not their problem.  You can always mail it in.  Data preservation?  You should have had a backup.  Weeks without a computer while it's shipped off to Pegatron?  You're too poor to have a spare?  Not their problem.

  • Storage firm Drobo has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

At this point, they deserve to fail.  I've seen far too many hardware failures, the software is awful, and support is abysmal.

I said years ago that I would never install another Drobo, and I've stuck to it.  The few that are still functioning at client sites will be replaced with something else as soon as their budget allows.

  • UK pushing for on-device scanning for child abuse materials

They scan for a match found in database. They don't get data at all. They have no way of knowing what data you have.

I am fine with that approach.

I would not be fine if they actually read data. But that's not what is happening.

Somebody sends you a text that has an image that matches something in the database.  That image is scanned.  The government is alerted.  You are arrested, all of your electronics are seized.  Days to months later, it's discovered it isn't your fault and you're released (if you're lucky).  Years later you get your 'accidentally' damaged devices back.  Your face is in the paper and on the internet because you've been accused of having kiddie porn.  You lose your job, you lose your friends, you lose your home, you may even lose your family.  Nobody pays attention to your innocence, you're forever known to the public as a child molester.

You fine with that?  Because that's how this will end up working.

  • Apple releases new firmware update for redesigned Siri Remote

I have the Apple tv remote version before this one and absolutely hate it. Mostly the touch surface which is incredibly finicky. Those that have used both, is this one much better?

It's much worse.  This doesn't even give you a touch surface.

The touch remote isn't ergonomic, but neither is this one.

This one is a step backward.
