  • Apple Watch holiday sales volume beat entire Swiss watch industry for first time

    1) I wondered if and when AI was going to get to this story. This is massive… especially since Apple Watch is an abject failure. /s

    2) As we know from Android- and Windows-based vendors, unit sales means squat without other factors. I'm curious how the Swiss watch makers are doing. I assume their high-end and low-end products aren't suffering, but that their mid-tier products—where I think they make the bulk of their revenue and profits—would be heavily affected by the Apple Watch

    3)  As I've said for nearly 3 years now, the Apple Watch is "unnecessary, yet indispensable" and that still holds true today, if not more so, since it now allow me to keep my iPhone off my person more often as I now have the cellular Watch, and I wear it to bed to monitor and record my sleep patterns, only charging during my bis in die ablutions.
Re #2.  This observation (mid-tier Swiss is in the cross-hairs) is entirely right.  For more on this, see this regarding Apple's pricing strategy.

    Also:
    - how crazy is it that this report compares the output of a new watch company to an entire industry/group of companies?
    - what would the figures look like when matched in price range ($250-$1100) watches?
    - would we see some drop off in swiss sales or is this entirely competition with non-consumption?
    - finally - if mid-range Swiss watches are the gateway to higher end, this is a disaster for the swiss makers.

  • How and when to preorder HomePod: The official Apple Store app is your best bet on Friday

I was disappointed that my plans for HomePod at Christmas didn't come to pass. But glad that what looked like it was going to be April (if "early 201x" had its usual meaning in Apple-speak) could be January. And happiest that we'll be able to end our unhappy experiment with Google Home (it is only good for general web searching - but I will say it is very good at that).

  • HomePod hands on account finds sound superior to competitors, data only read to main user

So as an Apple fanatic, I really want this HomePod, but I can’t justify needing it unless it replaces my sound bar for the television or my speakers for my iMac.  I checked yesterday and found that my TV has Bluetooth built-in, so does that mean I could pair it to HomePod? I assume pairing it to my iMac to use as my computer speakers would be fairly easy correct?
I suspect that using it as a soundbar connected via bluetooth will result in a lag. I vaguely recall that this is one of the problems AirPlay was meant to solve (where all speakers on AirPlay are in sync). Don't get me started on trying to figure out why AirPlay 2 (which mostly seems to add multiple speakers on iOS as MacOS already supports multiple speakers) is so delayed.

  • Get the i out: iBooks rebranded as 'Books' in iOS 11.3 beta 1

Or, as I suggested last year, this renaming is just laying the groundwork for a notebook form iOS device.  iBook is the natural name for something like this, especially to distinguish from MacBooks.

I know such a form has a lot of issues but it's not like Apple hasn't been thinking about how to resolve them for at least a decade.
