  • iOS 12.1 beta points to 4K external display support on new iPad Pros

I think an iPad with no bezzel like the iPhone X would enable it to be truely used in any orientation and therefore could feasably have a lightning port on one side an a USB C on the other. That way you can still use all current accessories and use any new stuff just as well, plus you could use both at the same time, greatly increasing its capabilities and making it a proper Pro tablet.

  • How to connect Apple's AirPort Express to any router to make an AirPlay 2 streaming target...

Immediately went online and bought a used Airport Express for 50 bucks from someone literally down the road from me. Setup took about 5 minutes. If you buy a used one, do this: Connect it to your router with an ethernet cable connecting it to the ethernet port with the arrows on the Express. Press the reset button on the Airport Express for a few seconds till the light starts blinking rapidly. Now it should come up in Airport Utility and you can set it up as a new device. Choose the option to join a Wifi and if you select the one your Mac is connected to, you don't even have to enter the wifi password. Then its smooth sailing using the instructions from the article. You can change the Airplay Name it shows separately from the Base Station Name, which is neat. Streaming to Apple TV and newly acquired Airport Express simultaneously worked straight away. Thank you to the exec at Apple who okayed this update and Appleinsider for letting me know :)

  • Why you want a macOS home server, and how to get one going

I have set up and maintain 2 Mac Mini Server setups in 2 architectural offices. Has been running flawlessly for the last 5 years. One of them I restarted the other day after 364 days uptime.

Both are still on 10.10.5 and use a Promise Pegasus2 Thunderbolt hard drive, which is lightning fast, reliable and can handle lots of concurrent users. 2 swappable single external drives for a time machine backup of it, which I swap out every couple of months. Plus we use Backblaze to back everything up to the cloud.

I would add, that I would recommend adding an UPS to it. We use the APC 900 for it and it can get a good 20 minutes of battery power for the mac mini, hard drives and network switch. Plus it adds protection to everything as it will smooth out any spikes in the power. Nothing like your server not being effected by a tripped fuse, lightning or short power cut.

  • Apple predicted to ditch Touch ID for Face ID with 2018 iPhone lineup

I think Face ID actually makes a lot more sense on Macs then on the phone, because the touch ID sensor would always have to be on a peripheral - except on laptops of course - but even there I would rather have it scan my face. I rarely need to unlock my computer or authorize something without looking at my screen. Makes much more sense there.
