Well there was a PPC440 patent acquisition made fairly recently from IBM (to the Cell gang), no? In other interesting notes, I happened across the inkling not too long ago that the 440's actually find use in some of Cisco's switches and routers. Neat, eh? -

They could be triple-440 chips, or a Cell with 2 SPE's. Such chips shouldn't be horribly expensive. Remember, one of the goals of the redesign is to address the cost overrun, so it's not going to be the Cadillac of consoles. -
