This may not be relevant as you are specifically talking about the ATI 8500, but I installed the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro prior to upgrading to Panther and have had no problems at all. Hope this helps. -

Mine is a 350 MGz G4 (AGP) with Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card and 704 RAM running Panther just fine for doing what you describe. -
