we eat horrible food, we don't excercise, and everyone wants to think that bad things (i.e. being overweight) are not their fault.

obesity is a major problem in the us, Australia is on the good way for that too, as usual the européans have 10 years of late, but they are also on the way.

The scientific study, (the american ones) show that the main problem is the way of eating. Personaly i think that many americans are concerned by this problem, i was surprise that when i went in USA in 1992 so many food, like sauce where low-fat, it was nearly impossible to find something that was not low-fat.The problem is that low-fat food doesnt prevent to be fat, low fat food are not very good that all.

Eat better (the goal is equilibration), and things will become better.

i think its more fat men than women here. women have to keep their figure if they hope to win over the guys. men just dont give a damn. i know i used to stay in shape for high school baseball, but now in college...who cares?

    All the good frito-lay products.

trivia: Lays potato chips cannot be sold NORTH of Indiana State Road 28. They must be sold as FRITO-lays potato chips.

Because we super-size everything, won't move off the sofa, and expect to be able to take a pill to "melt away the pounds" while still being able to choke down all the fat laden goodies that we can't live without.

In certain areas we have the opposite problem- women (and men, now) who consider themselves failures if they don't have 6% body fat. You see young women (in their 20's) here in Los Angeles weighing about 8 lbs with big plastic breasts, big plastic lips, and big plastic hair. They don't even look like people- they look like big scary Barbies. Why do people think this looks good?

I'm married to a registered dietitian, and this is what I would guess from talking to her about it:

    1. Easy availability of very high-calorie food.

    2. An increase in the sedentary lifestyle (i.e., TV watching).

It's true that the US is fatter than just about any other country, and it's been getting dramatically worse in the past 25 years or so. Diabetes (adult-onset type) is basically an epidemic right now in the US due to obesity.

And actually, women are more likely to be obese than men. African-American women in particular are off the charts, statistically. But women tend to get fat butts and men tend to get fat guts, and fat guts are unhealthier than fat butts.

And those big plastic breasts take up 6 lbs of the 8 lbs.

yes, i think that the biggest issue is just laziness. theres no need to get off our asses and do things anymore. excercize is almost silly now--thers no point. most of this has to do w/ technology...computers, cars, etc. if we're hungry, we can order out. when we're bored we watch tv or go on the computer. theres no need to just go outside and go for a walk or play some ball or whatever.

i see this very much on campus here at a&m. last year, we had a power outtage, and the results were amazing. people came out of their rooms fer what seemed like the first time in days. they were rubbing their eyes, and stretching...

we started up a game of football and actually did some physical excercize. but once the electricity came back, everyone left to go back in the comfort of air conditioning and technological based environment. i, for one, wish things were back how they were before computers were so dominating--u know how hard it is to find people to start up a game of football or baseball can be at times now...??? its sad really...

I'm an American and I'm quite slender and healthy, thank you very much. I lift weights four days a week, run 3-5 times a week, and play basketball at least once a week.

The real reason is that we're simply inferior to the rest of the world. Right rest of the world?
