The Economic Daily News story, however, talks of a 15in display with a detachable keyboard but no battery. That suggests we're not going to be looking at a tablet as such, but some kind of tabletop terminal, perhaps driven by Mac OS X Server.
I am afraid it's nonsense.
1. No battery means a power plug, which means unportable.
2. Detachable keyboards are provided with Macs for 15 years or so.
3. Who needs a tabletop terminal for Mac OS X Server as a separate hardware item? Can't they just use iBooks or any PC for that purpose?
I think what the Register is talking about is a thin client for schools. Screen plus keyboard with all the heavy lifting done by a single (or a cluster of) Mac OS X Server machines on the network.
Seems sensible, Sun and others have been talking about this for years and it's probably finally feasible.

This is what the iMac originally was, actually. It's just that Apple is currently in a much better position to implement this sort of thing.
haha...although i didn't pick up on it i'll assume ur using sarcasm
perhaps apple finally mastered the tesla coil mixed with solar engergy...if any company could do it, i think it would be Bell Labs...perhaps apple is really buying them and their front is Universal ; )
A flat-panel Mac with or without a 20kg base is one thing. A batteryless tablet is another. First is at least imaginable, the latter is a misconception.

If the purported 5" x 7" enclosure is true, then we just may see two radically new computers/devices.

Maybe they finally understood the wireless energy transfer patents by Dr. Nikola Tesla ;-)

It said the 19" iMac is coming this May:
"Sources added that Apple still plans to launch a 19-inch new iMac. Quanta is the contract manufacturer for all three new iMacs, sources said."
19" iMac
scroll down to take a look of it.

"Meet the new terminal, same as the old terminal."
It's funny to think of these as VT100 terminal, but with Quartz Extreme!
What's the Netboot limit for OS X Server (licenses aside), 50?

Compal is also said to have landed orders for a 15.4-inch PowerBook, a replacement version of the 15.2-inch PowerBook made by Quanta Computer.
So it seems Quanta isn't making the 15.4" at all, Compal is.
Just more information, do with it as you see fit.
