is there any way to play import dvd's on my imac's superdrive? (this can include both paid and free software solutions, legal or otherwise. ) also, would installing such software void any warranties?
You'll need the region-free firmware first, which exist, but a Mac flashing program isn't...So you'll have to take the drive out of a Mac, plug it into a PC, flash the firmware, connect it back in the Mac...this is much harder with the iMac.
As for region free player (which will only work on region free firmware), I remember seeing a hack for the Apple DVD player LONG time ago, pre-dates OS X's DVD player...so I think you are out of luck

A bit of misinformation here I think.
I have a superdrive iMac and the cracked multi-region firmware was released about a month ago and can be downloaded from the link given above by defiant.
There isn't a firmware flasher for X yet but there is one for os 9 so a reboot and you are golden.
You might want to wait as Apple are rumored to be releasing a flasher for X because of the firmware bug in the superdrive that can wreck your drive if you use the new x4 DVD-Rs. You also probably want a hacked version of that firmware rather than the one available now.
You don't need to hack Apple's DVD player software as it allows you to switch regions 5 times before locking. Defiant's link above has a utility that will reset the counter and let you change it another 5 times (and another 5 etc.)
Finally if you do want a region free DVD player then VLC seems to be coming along nicely.

i heard about the apple firmware bug, and luckily i havent used the new 4x dvd-r's.
as for the hack, im not sure i want to void any warranties though, being that i dished out good money for applecare (and i still have 2.5 years to go). darn. will the counter reset work without flashing the firmware?
and lastly, i feel dumb for asking, but whats VLC? i had looked at some regular dvd players (not the computer kind) on some UK sites, but they wont ship 'em to the US. but i dont know the difference is between code-free and region-free, and if both are necessary. i dont mind paying some money for something reliable, and a friend suggesting a mod chip for my playstation2 as another alternative. but i do like watching movies better on my imac.
hey there! im fine. whats up with you? thanks for the link. i blame the UK for this... if they only released their dvd's for region 1 people too. i like cheesy british comedy..LOL...i cant help it.

In short, I don't think so...
