The reason for the thread is because I have learned that it isn´t really obvious what kind of jobs that give what kind of salaries. I have nbeen rather surpriced that two jobs that are almost alike can give very different salaries. And I also wanted to see if there would be a difference between different countries.
One "theory" I have is that the difference in salary between a MacJob and a high salary job is much smaller here than in US. I just wanted to see if it was a trend I could see between AI members.
$10 an hour, 40 a week, in my 4th year at a supermarket my uncle owns working in the deli... i get free lunch and I shouldnt, thats about the only perk i ahve--that and not being able to get fired ... but seriously, most of my friends do DICK and get paid the same, if not more then I do... and my uncle owns the store@!!! oh well, i have fun at work... still sucks tho because I cant go out with the hot cashiers b/c of my "position" whatever... I also get close to $35 taken out in taxes each week
Edit: just to clarify, the friends im talking about DO NOT work at the same store I do, they ahve completely different jobs, and they do nothing there and get paid the same if not more then I do...
I agree, at least in the states, it's quite taboo to ask someone how much money they make. It's not polite, so it's one of those things that you just, well, don't do Therefore, I won't be disclosing mine. I'm a Human Interface Designer, I run the studio myself, and I make more than most people my age.
plus stock options (currently unused options valued at $50,000 before taxes/fees), and other stock-based incentives.Plus benefits. Plus 4 weeks vacation per year. Plus sick time. Plus the beer/wine party this wednesday.
Plus indegestion, eye strain, obesity, balding, halitosis, and such.
As others have stated, it's generally considered improper to discuss how much you make if you are an American. There is actually a well known reason for this, though we hesitate to bring it up as we Americans do not want to ruin our reputation for polite deference. It is done in order not to rub it in for our fellow Americans in the tourism industry who are so impoverished because they depend on Europeans to tip them for their wages.
(Disclaimer: This was a joke btw, just in case anyone is too dense to see that. Though maybe there is just a little bit of truth in there somewhere. )
Well I may be in the States, but the main reason I see people not discussing finances is the fact that most people don't have real money and finance a lot of stuff on credit. It gives them the appearance of looking rich when they own nothing and have a negative net worth.
I have no car loans, no student loans, and no credit card/consumer debt.
(example buy a new car and drive it off the lot, you now have a net worth of about -6 to -10k dollars)
Also there are so many other ways to measure your real value of work like stock options, retirement packages, benefits, job security, etc.
I don't mind disclosing what I make because as a teacher, you can look it up on a friggin' web page that our district posts.
I am 32 years old. I am starting my 10th year of teaching and will make $53k a year. I don't know what that is per hour. I pay no income tax because of my various real estate investments (rental apartments and homes) They give me an income of approximately $3600 per month but after mortgage interest, repairs, improvements (sometimes to my home, and sometimes to theirs ) I owe no income tax.
As for benefits, I have a full pension (not a crappy 401k), full medical and dental, I get 10 paid sick days per year and I am contracted to work 176 days per year. (I get 3 months off and obviously all major holidays)
I think the reason Americans don't think it's appropriate to state how much money one makes, is because most Americans care too much how much money they make, and how much everyone else makes, and they hate to admit how much they care.
They care SO much, and equate a high income with being a good person to such a degree, that saying "I make a lot of money" is seen as equivalent to saying "I'm better than almost everyone else, except those rare few who also make a lot of money."
Of course, I would say that, since I make a lot of money!

Not much, but it pays the bills.
[edit]
Americans hate talking about money because we always want more. And for some reason want people to think we make more than we do.
