I have a TV show that i recorded from my EyeTV and burned to a VCD with toast. If i want to get the original MPG file off that VCD, how do I go about doing it?
I was under the impression that they were the same thing, but I guess not. Could someone explain the difference? 'Cuz I thought VCD was just the specification of the bit rates and all of an mpg file but whatever. Now I am not making sense. But if someone could clear that up for me, that would be cool.

It is an absolute, horrible PAIN. Really. It's such a pain that I've repressed the memory of how I did it...
I *believe* you'll need to grab the dat file off the VCD (from the MPEGAV folder). That will be playable in Quicktime in OS 9. I *think* you can just change the extension of the file from .dat to .mpg, and then you're good, though.
Hmm. That seems easy. Oh! I was thinking of how I converted a VCD to an mpeg4....
Let us know what happens. I don't have OS 9 around me at the moment.

ummmmmm i am trying this right now... i get an error code -36
after looking at the permissions of the disk it seems they are messed up...
Select Open a Movie in a New Window and navigate through the VCD. You are looking for relatively large .DAT files that will be in either the MPEGAV or SEGMENTS folders (I can't promise I got the spellings exactly right).
Open the Movie. Check briefly that it is the desired movie.
Now under File select Save As. Choose a destination disk and a file name.
REALLY IMPORTANT. Click the radio button to save as a self contained movie. Click OK. It will take several minutes for a 300MB movie. If you don't click this it only makes a small file which is a pointer to the original file.
Can't you actually just change the file extension from .dat to .mpg?
Cheers

QT will play the file even with the .dat extension. The problem is getting the file off of the VCD. There might be other ways but the only one I found to work reliably was to have QT read the file off the VCD and save it to the HD as outlined above.

I am surprised that such a simple thing doesn't exist...

And I cant seem to change them manually...
what is the CLI command to copy the file?
You first need to boot into OS 9.
Next launch QT (you need the pro level).
Select Open a Movie in a New Window and navigate through the VCD. You are looking for relatively large .DAT files that will be in either the MPEGAV or SEGMENTS folders (I can't promise I got the spellings exactly right).

Did you try Copy/Paste in the Finder?

ok i still cant copy the file....
i get an error -36 when I try to copy the disc in any way (duplicate, drag to home folder... anything)
Quicktime will not play the .dat and neither will VLC now (im sure it used to be able to, but I upgraded it...)
it says error input-output error...
I really don't want to boot into 9, but I might not have a choice...
