Governmental Operating System

Food for thought:

Imagine one operating system, funded by the UN, coded by programmers from all the UN nations for all language packages. This would be the best of microsoft, apple, linuxes all combined.

This would elminate all of our compatability issues and just have software companies battle for best software to run on this ultimate OS that would run on all computers.

This biggest dissadvantage for mac os in my oppinion is the low market share with less software.

The biggest dissadvantage for windows is the pos interface.

The biggest dissadvantage for linux is again, marketshare.

    Why funded by the UN? You get caught up in the monolithic mentality if you'r efunded by a government or all-controlling enity (Microsoft is not all-controlling). Peole rogramming wouldn't be interestedin putting out the best product anymore, everyone else would HAVE to use it. Kinda like the Ma Bell answer. "Wedon't have to care. We're the phone company."

    And then we could have the government own all the businesses and regulate how much people get paid, and then we could all be equal and live in perfect harmony in an ...oh wait, that would be Communism.

    Are you sure you don't live in Cambridge? That idea of yours is a bit too "left" for Lexington.

    Probably wouldn't work, the israeli coded spreadsheet would refuse to import the arabian coded trade database, and the afghan cryptation system would turn pictures from the american photo-editor into funny caricatures of george bush...

    The Italian tax calculator would only count half of what you put into it, and the french word processor would list all english words as misspelled!

    LOL New!

    Obvious problems:

    "Designed by committee" is an insult for good reasons;

    No operating system can - or should be - all things to all people. Server OSs can look arcane and bureaucratic to people used to desktop OSs, for example, because they serve completely different needs. Ditto embedded OSs.

    International standards tend to codify existing practice to the greatest practicable extent, and that means that the result would look a whole lot like Windows.
