Google Maps overhaul coming to iOS with new 'material design' look, OpenTable reservations
Google announced on Wednesday that its popular Maps platform, including the free downloadable iOS application, will receive a major update in the near future, including a new look and new features, such as the ability to make restaurant reservations through OpenTable without leaving the app.
The new update to Google Maps will arrive "over the next few days" for both iPhone and Android, the company announced Wednesday. Google's official blog post showed the new look running on an iPhone, Android phone and Android tablet, but made no mention of the iPad app, potentially suggesting that update could come at a later date.
Most notably, Google Maps will have a new "material" design, in line with the company's latest overhaul of Its Android platform. The new, colorful look is intended to create shadows that mimic the real world, giving users a more intuitive interface.
The new Google Maps will also include the ability to reserve a table from directly within the Google Maps app. Powered by OpenTable, this functionality will be available to users in the U.S. only.
The company also spotlighted that Google Maps offers estimated pickup times and rates for the popular Uber car service when viewing transit data. These times and fares are displayed alongside trains, subways and other modes of shared transit.
Uber data will only appear for users who have the Uber app installed. The feature first debuted this May.
Google Maps is a free download form the iOS App Store designed for both iPhone and iPad. No specific launch date for the new update was given Wednesday.

Hilarious. As Apple removes the “materials” from its OS, Google adds them.
Lane guidance. That's basically the only reason I can't quit Google Maps. It's definitely a small feature that I greatly love.
'material design' look
How about the "iOS 8" look?
Since, you know, the iOS 8 version will be running on...
iOS 8.
Or is this a stealth attempt to use the look and function of a Google app to woo iOS users to Android?
Because that's worked out so well, clearly.
Just install it, rate it one star, and unistall. That simple.
Google Maps is great. In my area, it has far more POI data that Apple Maps. Also, turn-by-turn directions available on my iPhone 4. Once I upgrade to 6+ in the coming weeks (provided it is ever in stock at my carrier) I'll give Apple Maps another shot but I'm guessing the POI data will keep me on Google Maps. Just my opinion.

Why? It's a 5 star app.
I don't use OpenTable anymore. Found out my favorite restaurant was suffering due to the fact they refused to pay the huge fees that they require to put their business at a reasonable spot on the list. You may think you're getting proximity results, which good restaurant is close to me now, but no, the results you get are... who paid the most money to OpenTable. The keep raising their fees and taking a bigger cut from restaurants.
Yay, now Google can learn exactly what I like to eat and where so they can send me more targeted advertising!
No thanks.
Right on the money.
It's the reason why Goog exists and why their service is backasswards.
Windows Metro UI never looked better
You mean beta.
I like that this statement is also valid when comparing Metro to... anything at all. " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" /> (as in “...than that”)
sadly Google maps app looks way betta in iPhone than Google devices
Android users have low expectations.
I remember when my android tablet got updated from ICS to Jelly Bean. The entire OS lagged worse than before. Even my iPhone 4 running iOS 7.0 was better.
So much for Project Butter...more like peanut butter.

Well said ... that's exactly what I've been doing with each and every garbage from google!
Using postcodes instead of business names got it to work it out in the end but he wasn't impressed!
A colleague was using Google Maps (on a pc) today to work out mileage for his expenses. He realised something was wrong when the directions from Crewe to our branch in Nottingham actually took him into the centre of Leicester, a mere 30 miles away!

He wasn't impressed that Google was trying to put more money in his pocket?
