Just wondering if anyone knows a way to record something like 4 to 8 tracks of audio simultaneously on a 17" powerbook g4 and preserve each individual track for mixing later on. Will the optical audio input do this or do i need some special card?

You can use the MOTU 828, which uses a firewire interface, runs you about $800. It allows you to record up to 8 tracks simultaneously. I believe the company is called Mark of the Unicorn, hence MOTU. I think they also make a 4 track.
