Has anyone successfully loaded Vista on a MacBook via BootCamp?

Not on a MacBook, but on a MacBook Pro. Twice. Installs fine. Some hardware won't work correctly, such as the iSight.

Does it still require a bunch of partition screwing-around?

No. Pre-RC1 and RC1 do not require removing the EFI System Partition.
