  • The metaverse is 'off limits' on Apple's VR headset, claims report

Think about the failure of 3D movies at home and how your eyes work. When our eyes focus at a distance the muscles refocus the lens.  Virtual 3D environments, especially like a headset, force the eye to unnaturally focus “distant” scenes on a screen at a fixed short distance from your eye, causing eye strain during extended use. The closer the screen, the greater the strain.

  • Steve Jobs wanted ultra-optimized US manufacturing, Apple vets say

When I was certifying with the American Production and Inventory Control Society, we were taught that W. Edward Deming taught the principles of Statistical Process Control to Japanese scientists and engineers when American manufacturers, flush from victories in WWII, were arrogantly unenthusiastic about applying SPC to our own factories. That was between 1945 and 1950, though the principles of SPC were known here since the 1920's. You might say they took somethng we invented and discarded, then spanked us with it over the sixty plus years.

My theory is this: It took him 20 years to find an attorney who was sniffing the same brand of salts.

  • Inside Consumer Reports: Controversies surrounding the MacBook Pro and HomePod

Yeah, well, after Anntenagate and following a painful experience with a BD weed trimmer that had a five star rating AND a serious engineering flaw, I dumped Consumer Reports forever and saved the subscription fee. The flaw? That was the fact the belt drive would melt the plastic drive pulley after about 2 hours total run time. Is the pulley replaceable? No, that’s part of the motor assembly. $80 and you install if the warranty is out or voided. I voided mine because I REALLY wanted to know what was going on and not comfortable with taking it in for warranty service every othe time I used it. FIVE STARS! Bye-bye CR…

  • French court denies Apple injunction against tax protests

How very French, that these ATTAC members are complaining about companies, and directly to Apple, for using these loopholes rather than presenting their protests directly to the EC for not plugging said loopholes. It gives ATTAC members something to do, I suppose, and a feeling they are "doing some good" despite barking up the wrong tree.

  • What Apple would have to do to comply with Donald Trump's American-built mandate

Okay, so if overseas labor costs are estimated at $5 and moving to the U.S. would quadruple that, then we're only talking about $20 in labor costs here. I've read elsewhere the real issue is build response time and availability of engineers in the U.S. I think the example was that a project that could be done in 30 days in Taiwan would take 9 months here. Mr_Grey's link above is to a more contemporary take on that, post Trump's "build their damn computers and things here" statement.

  • A8, A8X: How Apple's custom silicon hit Samsung with a one-two punch

Boxcatcher has it right: Welome to the "dumbocracy" where we viify anyone who disagrees with us, instigate trial-by-social-media fiascos and accept outrageous claims as fact. The fact-checking honest journalists are out there, but the MONEY makes click bait float to the top, while fact checking takes time. I can also see that "trumped up" will soon have a special meaning the Urban Dictionary! It's little wonder we're susceptible to "election hacking" (brain hacking) by foreign powers' social media campaigns.

  • Apple ordered to pay $838M for infringing Caltech Wi-Fi patents

If Apple loses on appeal, that would set a precedent where all manufacturers are then responsible for vetting their vendors’ compliance with patents related to THEIR products? Instead of fixing the patent system, let’s break it some more! CalTech’s response to the judgement makes it sound like they know it would put another break in the system, but don’t really care, since it would line their pockets in a big way. How long until we, as downstream customers, are liable for infringement because we failed to audit patent compliance of every seller and manufacturer of every component involved the products of any kind we purchase from ANY company? Think about your car, or all the products used to make the home you live in, like ranges, refrigerators, HVAC systems. Sounds like a nightmare to me.

Sorry folks. This is totally fake. No way 'computational photography' produced this.
I agree. I've done this with 35mm film and digital SLR's as well. A lot of people doing 360 degree pano's show the same thing; "multiple me's." Of course, it wouldn't happen with a 360 degree or spherical single-shot rig. But hey! She got the buzz she wanted and the dress is nice. Congrats!

  • Tim Cook responds to $14.5B EU tax bill with open letter, says decision will be reversed

Didn't something like this happen to "the colonies" back in the 1700's with the British Empire setting the taxation rules? Look how that turned out.
