  • Apple's established 'staircase model' suggests 'iPhone 8' price could reach $1100

The chart certainly shows what incredible value the SE 64 is against earlier models of the same size. It is not all increasing prices.

  • Fitbit's Apple Watch competitor will offer third-party apps & 'app gallery' at launch - CE...

I would think Fitbit would be better served by making cheap and functional items. "Good enough" type stuff. This will get expensive.

    Like this Fitbit?

  • Flash is dead: Adobe announces end-of-life plans, will stop distribution in 2020

This is good news but getting already constructed websites to be updated may prove hard. I have had to write to my son's school many times when they have set web based homework using sites that require Flash. As an Apple only family my son has been unable to do the homework due to our lack of Flash on our iMacs. l believe this is discriminatory and may result in no marks. The school has always been good about the issue but the homework still continues sometimes to be Flash based. I expect most of the teachers have no idea about the problems with Flash and many owners of older websites have not got resources to update their web pages.

  • TSMC's 7nm process enhancement may keep Apple from using Samsung for 'A12' chip production...

The preference is to use one chip vendor. It’s really expensive to use two, because the SoC design has to be modified for each process, and then taped out for both, maybe multiple times. Apple needs two design teams for that, and they have to be well coordinated. If one vendor is ahead of the other in certification then the other vendor holds up the process. It’s easier if one vendor is delayed than one moving forwards, and one not. Either way, there is enough tolerance in time that both will be on time.

what happened previously was that TSMC’s 16nm process was 20% more power efficient than Samsung’s 14nm process. But when both phones were tested, in system differences were about 5%, which is insignificant, showing that the system uses so much more power than just the SoC.

i imagine that Apple doesn’t want to use Samsung any more than necessary. And that’s not because of their rivalry, but because they rightfully don’t want to depend upon one vendor for so many major parts.

Apple knows is wise not to have all its eggs in one basket. I believe they take a strategic long term view by switching back and forth or better sharing suppliers. Plus, if there was some unfortunate incident that seriously disrupted manufacture of key components for many months or even more than a year they can look to another existing supplier to increase supply.  If you only have one supplier then whatever the price advantage it could be very risky.

  • Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 seen launching in September against Apple's 'iPhone 8'

They really have no choice but to announce and ship before the 10th anniversary "iPhone8.". Otherwise they will be at risk for being compared unfavorably to the Apple product.
I would love if we have a Signal Tap moment with Apple announcing its new 10th Anniversary iPhone as the iPhone 11. What would Samsung do then?
