I wouldn't contest that much modern rap be it underground, alternative, indie, mainstream whatever...is NOT poetry....there is some, but its rare compared to the mass of just rhyming.

underground hiphop is NOT an oxymoron....many unknown rappers are out there, they have their own little groups of other rappers who they hang with, they may have freestyle battles or whatever...its their own thing, not mainstream at all....unheard of, but it does exist...it doesn't get much more underground than that.

furthermore little cuss, I have begun to think that you are being a little cuss for the sole purpose of fulfulling your moniker, and unless you can prove otherwise, I'm going to let you delve in your pile of ignorance and close-minded self-righteous quasi-intelligent existence.

Here's a verse:

Well now you're forced to listen to the teacher and the lesson
Class is in session so you can stop guessin
If this is a tape or a written down memo
See I am a professional, this is not a demo
In fact call it a lecture, a visual picture
Sort of a poetic and rhythm-like mixture
Listen, I'm not dissin but there's somethin that you're missin
Maybe you should touch reality, stop wishin
For beats with plenty bass and lyrics said in haste
If this meaning doesn't manifest put it to rest
I am a poet, you try to show it, yet blow it
It takes concentration for fresh communication
Observation, that is to see without speaking
Take off your coat, take notes, I am teachin
a class, or rather school, cause you need schooling
I am not a king or queen, I'm not ruling
This is an introduction to poetry
A small dedication to those that might know of me
They might know of you and maybe your gang
But one thing's for sure, neither one of y'all can hang
Cause yo I'm like a arrow, and Scott is the crossbow
Say something now ... thought so
You seem to be the type that only understand
The annihilation and destruction of the next man
That's not poetry, that is insanity
It's simply fantasy far from reality
Poetry is the language of imagination
Poetry is a form of positive creation
Difficult, isn't it? The point? You're missin it
Your face is in front of my hand so I'm dissin it

not traditional 'rap' per se... more like mc over atmospheric drum and bass. it's all flow. no lyrics.

Conrad is the greatest lyricist. His words are absolutely musical.

If Eminem has talent I must have misconstrued it as marketed mass appeal (under heavy pretense).

And if Tiger knows poetry from a hole in the ground I'll be the next guy to fly the space shuttle.

Not saying some rap can't be poetic. Just reemphasizing that making words rhyme is not poetry. Poetry has existed since before christ was born. Drums were beaten even earlier. You mix the two and voila - rap. The idea is nothing new, all that's new is who's buying into the notion of owning poetry this go around.

Poor grammar and vocabulary is the lame - especially if someone is going to start spouting off about poetry without even knowing where it comes from.

ALL Music is rooted in Poetry set to music. As with most things it is the "Quality" of the poetry that differentiates the Artist. Say what you want about Tupac Shakur but he said things and phrased his lyrics in ways that created an indelible stamp. You new his songs with just one line. Hip Hop is not dead but it must evolve.

Can someone explain to me what exactly hip-hop is? Is it defined by the beat, the message, the presentation, or what?

On that score, any music classifications beyond the obvious, e.g., rock, country, jazz, rap, classical, etc., confuse me. What are the differences between techno, trance, ambient, electronica, industrial, house, dance, etc. These all seem to blur together to me. Am I the only one confused by this proliferation of music types?

I love electronic music. I'm not a fan of trance and house, but I really love alot of ambient, trip-hop styled chill music...as do I love drum and bass/jungle. but all this stemmed from my original interest in experimental electronic stuff, that pushes the limits of conventional metering.

That is weak. Since rap is poetry, that is weak poetry. Plus, you spelled Limp Bizkit wrong.

It is conclusive: Eminem is sugar-coated crap. He probably doesn't write much of the lyrics anymore, and he probably thinks MIDI is some new slang word for a drug.

Later maybe I'll post examples of real rap. Notorious BIG, Bone Thugs, Wycelf Jean and the Fugees etc. are way better. Cuss, do you know what I'm talking about?

TigerWoods99, you usually know what you're talking about, but although Eminem is catchy, so are the Backstreet Boys. For some serious rap or even just fun beats, Notorious BIG, Bone Thugs, Moby, or many others, are better, IMHO.

Hmm.....how bout he said "Biscuit" not Bizkit, as in the food. Im sure I can spell better than you.

Notorious BIG? Wow, you must be into the whole bad Boy thing. Yeah, he was pretty BIG alright. That's about all I have to say as far as that goes.

As far as rappers being poets, Id say Tupac Shakur was. he wrote a book of poems which are actually very good.

little cuss: If Eminem wrote a rap about you, he'd probably talk about Viagra, because thats what you need nowadays.

Where is Bone from btw? E. 99th & St Clair! They put it down for C-Town.

What's southern about Bone? I didnt know I lived in the south.

yeah, TigerWoods99, just look at what you're saying for a second. Notorious BIG wrote about being "big" for a reason. It's not image. Eminem is. In hypnotize where Notorious BIG says "I like it when you call me big poppa!" he is making other "big" guys feel more ok about themselves. Now, I'm only 140 pounds (I guess I can identify with Moby being picked on for fitting in a trunk ) Eminem is just another Britney Spears, so what if the music genre is different, and his childhood was. He doesn't write his own music, I have a feeling, and probably gets "help" with the lyrics too. Bone Thugs have real MUSIC behind their rap, they are really gifted.

Limp biscuit is what you get at McDonald's. I know that's what he said, I was just playing. I love most of Eminem's songs, especially on the first CD, but the artist himself, I'd run him over if I saw him.
