Half the freaking planet has posted to their blog about the new $800 Apple tablet rumor. But as of 1:30 pm eastern time you STILL have not done so yourself.

What, are you guys special or something?

Make your official post about it already!

In the meantime everyone, here is a link to the story. I'm sure you've all read it a dozen times already from other sites.

Special - how about rational. What good does it do to reprint what has been already printed many times? Appleinsider can do what they do best wait for fresh information.

Exactly so why read the same article one more time?

Somehow, I think the tablet is going to be more popular. Have fun dragging that desktop replacement around though.

To be serious for a moment....

I've been reading reports (here is an example report: http://theappleblog.com/2009/07/16/m...-netbook-envy/) on how netbook sales, regardless of their inherent design problems, are causing an effect on mac sales overall.

It occurs to me that to overcome this (and redefine the market) Apple will have to come out with a product that addresses that particular market segment.

    They have no choice now.

And not only do they have to come out with something but that....something....will also have no choice but to be one helluva product!

In other words, prepare to be thoroughly impressed to the utmost at the upcoming Apple fall event!

    EDIT: ahem....*clears throat*

Correct, for this project they've brought the people who originally designed the first Mac Portable out of retirement.

If and when it is announced, it's gonna be called the iBook. C'mon, you know it!

What are books good at that tablets are not? Folding. Apple's iBook folds. That's why the name works. This tablet will not be called iBook.

    Mac touch FTW yo!

There are a number of ways to consider those numbers, they are statistics after all.

What everyone should realize though is that Apples lineup has been doing very well and I'm actually expecting a very interesting conference call next week. I suspect MBP sales sky rocketed after the release of the new machines. They are that good in my mind.

In any event at this point it is better to wait for honest numbers from Apple than to rely on numbers pulled out of thin air.

Actually they have all the freedom in the world to do as they please. Further I'm pretty much convinced that Apple has clam shell laptops covered and a giant tablet would not compete at all with netbooks.

The massive tablets have never been successful and I don't think Apple can do any better here supporting Mac OS/X. That is highly qualified but what I'm trying to say is that I don't expect Apples solution to be a mac OS/X based device.

Again we are likely jumping the gun here, as we will know exactly what is up next Tuesday but Apple is doing extremely well in what many are calling a recession. Could they have a better product line up, certainly but now is not the time to go wildly about with new products. they need to carefully consider the products and the likely user base.

Nice. While maybe I'm not thinking about the same sorts of devices that your are, I'm pretty much convinced that Apple has ground breaking products coming this year or early next. I', hoping that some of those products are Touch based devices of a tablet form factor, but I can see the possibility for interesting innovation with respect to laptops too. For that matter I could see Apple TV re-factored into a very interesting Touch/Mobile OS based device.

Notably I envision these products based on what I've seen in the electronics engineering magazines along with Photonics, that I've read. Apples Touch is really nice for what is a generation one device, but tech has been moving rapidly forward since then. it should be relatively easy for Apple to Quadruple performance and feature in a no holds bared Touch device.

Speak up my good man. We want to hear all you know!

What I'd like to see is a Touch based device that has a built in solar panel/display. It could be seen as really innovative and at the same time be seen as a device with almost perpetual operation. That given that enough power can be derived from the screen/solar cell.

I expect Apple (or more specifically Steve Jobs on stage) to unveil a device which as you say is truly the next step with their multi-touch based products. A generational leap beyond what everybody has done......in all respects except for power.

*sigh* Unfortunately, I don't see Apple really pushing the envelope....I mean REALLY pushing the envelope in terms of power technology. You would think with how slow battery technology is progressing Apple would have incorporated some sort of solar panels in their mobile products to offset the battery's relatively poor record in keeping up with the demands of the user.

For some reason though I think Apple will not do that. I wouldn't mind a little bit of bulk in Apple's devices if that meant having a lot more power.

Apple won't do anything if we don't let them know that it is a concern. A bigger battery would help the Touch but the thing is I have this idea that if you could turn the screen into a solar collector it might cover standby power. That would greatly extend battery life. The other option is a small nuclear generator.

Of course that might not work for technical reasons so why not add a clam shell type cover that protects the LCD and at the same time supports the solar charging when close would be cool. I know there will be people suggesting buying an external charger which certainly would work but like caculators this is something that is best integrated into the device.

All that is well and good. But you would think they would have provided a solar panel cover for the iphone. Or make the back of the iphone a solar panel.....or something.

Anyways, it's Monday and I'm hungry for more tablet rumors.

Sounds like a great third party opportunity, that is for an iPhone sized charging device. Such a device would have come in handly with the hiking I did this weekend. The battery is a very weak link on the iPhone especially if you forget Airplane mode when out of range of cell towers. The iPhone kills itself pretty fast if it is constantly hunting for a cell tower.

I'm just plain hungery. Getting outside will do that for you. As to the rumors with respect to tablets I've heard nothing. So can't go far there other than to say that APple will need two approaches to make everybody happy in these forums. I do hope they are paying attention to the forums especially with respect to run times and alternative energy harvesting. There is nothing worst than having your iPhone go dead because you are out of range of cell towers.
