It's just not going to happen - I suppose you could do everything but we wouldn't like and it wouldn't get adopted for anything. I'm only 26 and I can't stand to read stuff on my computer screen - if I'm going to spend any decent amount of time reading a manual or a book I'm going to print it out.
I often thought I would be like the lawyer in the original Star Trek episode that's arguing with Kirk about the virtues of books over memory cartridges.
But then again, this is Apple we are talking about. I agree 100% with you that if all they bring to the table is the existing user experiences, it will go no where. However, I don't expect them to just bring the common experience forward
I think we will have to see, but if anyone can make an ebook experience appealing, I have the greatest faith in Apple and their passionate focus on the end user experience. As was pointed out by another poster, if done correctly there is a huge potential for an ebook to stomp the crap out of a traditional paper experience. I too am a pretty tactile oriented person and it would have to be compelling indeed!
The newton already did some of this - over a decade ago! And it's handwriting recognition wasn't that bad after you used it. If you trained it, it was actually very good. It would often read stuff I wrote that I myself would have had a hard time deciphering later! You could sketch on it and it would straighten squares, round circles and straighten triangles. It was great for sketching simple subjects and the fastest way to create flow charts ever!
You can't tell me that in 15 years we haven't advanced? Frankly I'm shocked that no one ever picked up the ground-breaking work from the Newton and really ran with it. Perhaps Steve will rescue a Scully concept after all
