The 99% number is kind of hokey as they've combined the very satisfied and somewhat satisfied scores together.
The amazing thing is the 82% of respondents saying they are very satisfied and the 94% of respondents saying that the iPhone 3GS meets or exceeds their expectations. That's just crazy good.
Contrast the 99% with the Pre's survey (albeit with only 40 people) which said that 87% of the respondents were satisfied with the Pre. When you compare 87% to 99%, that's not that bad. But when you look at the Pre's 87% number, only 45% are very satisfied and 42% are somewhat satisfied!
Something that is "somewhat satisfying" isn't a big endorsement to me. That 82% of respondents in the survey say they are very satisfied is a very good number for the iPhone. The 45% for Pre is a not so good number.
Like so many other users, I love my new 3GS iphone. I had to leave Verizon of course to switch over and it's the one thing I regret. I live in the Bay Area of California and I would expect ATT to have excellent coverage there. But noooo. There are alot of dead pockets including in my home (yet the ATT coverage map indicates I'm in a very good zone). In addition, while standing still, the signal strength bands on my phone can fluxuate from nothing to several and from 3G and E networks. Not so stable in my book. Finally, when I do access the 3G network, sometimes it's horribly slow to the point of being worthless. I am hoping Apple is taking serious note of these issues and realizing it is significantly effecting their customer satisfaction.
On a more positive note, there are of course times (about 60% of the time) when things are working well with the ATT network, and then I have no complaints. Also when I've called ATT, I've experienced very good customer service; something I consistantly encountered with Verizon.

People who bought iPhone 3GSs are self satisfied and smug? You don't say?
No. You're obviously not a 3GS/ iPhone owner.
