"Mephisto".... Yes yes (notice my other post) a very good movie, unfortunately its almost impossible to find anymore and when you do manage to find it it will probably be dubbed. . . . which makes even a great movie hard to watch at times.

    but then again

    "army of darkness"

    &

    "evil dead"

I didnt like Evil Dead as much, but Army of Darkness ruled.

"My name is Ash, and I am a slave"

"I thought I killed it, but it came back! It got into my hand and made it go bad, so I lopped it off at the wrist"

"Baby, thats what we call pillow talk"

    "Hail to the king baby!"

    Best short film ever? <a href="http://www.ifilm.com/ifilm/product/film_info/0,3699,68390,00.html?ad_ref=top_twenty_shorts_high est_rated&cch=" target="_blank">More</a>

I'm blessed with a local video store that stocks all sorts of rare and hard to find films (it's very close to the University Of Connecticut, so it pays to keep this stuff in stock) and dubbed films are almost impossible to find on their shelves. And for the record the copy of Mephisto they have is subtitled.

If you want to see the most horrifying film ever made pick up a copy of the British film Threads.

No one ever walks away from that film the same.

I would vote for Apocolypse Now. Simply stunning.

Second place would be the director's cut of Bladerunner. Another stunning movie.

I have to admit that Apocalypse Now had some of the best scenes Ive ever seen in a movie. When he goes to kill the old man, your not really there. It draws you in so bloody well.

I have a friend who I went to see the redux with, he couldnt sit through it, the gore got to him. I asked him aftewards why is bothered him, he plays enough gorey games that it shouldnt. He simply said "ya, but those arent real"

Nobody mentions Citizen Kane? This is it. Not only because of Orson Welles' genius but also his team of incredible artists and technicians who developed a whole new way of filmmaking in Hollywood. It's not my favorite (2001: A Space Odyssey) but it was groundbreaking.

Interesting read for an 18-year-dead thread.   But I can't believe no one ever mentioned
"Blazing Saddles" ... (though there were a couple other Mel Brooks titles back in the list.)

Yes, they're cheaply done and full of slapstick and they sold as comedies... but his movies, especially Blazing Saddles, really dealt with social problems.
