When talking about what DSL means in respect to lips.

    Jonathan had this to say:

*the mouse goes onto the "Lock Topic" button*

Let's just leave it as a mystery, eh?

    --------

Does anybody else find it odd that this is allowed?

Admins are good but who is going to be there to admin the admins? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

If this were a democratic system the Mods would look over the admins while the admins would keep check on the mods. The admins would not make a decision unless the majority of mods agreed on it.

Now, if there is an emergency, the Admins may declare an act of war without first consulting the mods, but this will only be used in extreme cases. Example:

MOSR launches a DOS attack on the AI servers, Jonathon may launch a counter DOS attack on the MOSR servers without Mod approval.

Every 4 months or so the general members of the board will vote for new admins and every 6 months new mods.

Of course the voting will be skewed based on which mods lock the least amount of threads. Would you vote for someone who locked your thread?

Also, if you donate money to a Mods campaign none of you threads will ever be locked. Ahh democracy.

I don't think it would work though. Maybe We should allow each member of the boards to be a Mod/Admin and we can all delete posts, ban people, and lock threads. The whole community will share the whole board. Everyone is equal.

I think I just proposed Communisim on the AI Boards.

note that the Lips thread, literally 2 posts before, someone had said "dick sucking lips"... which it is... and i figured that rather than letting the conversation degenerate into off topicness (as this one has) i'd stop that right there..

    Communism, eh?

    ...works in theory.... heh

Oh, and get this thread back on topic, damnit!

    Nice one Willoughby.

    Back to task.

I am not in favor of stoppin gpeople from saying "bad" words on their own time with no one else listening. Who's gonna police you?

The saying of oaths and swears are not HARMFUL to children except for the anger and humiliation the children learn it's okay to express. IT IS NOT OK TO TEACH YOUNG PEOPLE THAT IT IS GOOD TO DEMEAN AND DISHONOR OTHER PEOPLE.

They do not know about limiting and holding back hatred. They do not know about temperance and mediation.

The same thing applies to violence. I do not approve of teaching a 5-year old karate, because he does not yet know that the most important thing is NOT fighting.

Thus, I agree with the removal of the offending word from the remake. It makes the movie look a little silly (you can see what he says by his lip movements) but I agree with it nonetheless.

Then agiain, you could make the argument that it is the parent's jobto explain what is going and why one thing was said. I'd agree with that too. Hmm. Good question.

    And I just realized something.

Penisbreath was my father's family's cussword. The four brothers would routinely use it in their youths to put eachother down.

So, perhaps Penisbreath was equivalent to calling someone a bastard today. Nowadays, penisbreath is insensitive to gays. I dunno why bastard is not insensitive to bastards. I suppose the opportuniteis for everyone to get rich in America nullify the fact of your birth.

I plan to get rich sometime soon.'

I think you both overestimate and underestimate kids here. When I saw the film as a kid (I guess I was about 10) I perceived the comment as nothing other than a put down of his brother (along the lines of "Shit-for-brains") and made no connection to sexual slurs of any kind. Same goes for Grease, I must have seen that twenty times (the theaters let you sit through multiple showings back then) and didn't notice any of the sexual references until I was much older.

As for underestimating kids- how many kids haven't heard the "sticks-or-stones" axiom? And siblings, especially, recognize the need to insult each other from time to time.

As someone who's been through a couple different martial arts I can tell you three things- 1. Starting young makes a BIG difference and 2. An incredible amount of emphasis is placed on non-violence in most kids martial arts. 3. Until your very, very good trying to use karate on someone else will get your ass kicked so a bully 5 year old would get a quick lesson in humilty.

The real question is would you deprive your kids of the wonder of seeing E.T. if that line had remained. Also, it is rated PG not G isn't it. I don't think it is JUST a kids movie.

What a phony society we live in. I go into the supermarket to buy groceries and on line at the checkout I can see on the National Enquirer headlines like "Whitney Houston Beaten Up By Drug Dealer" and all sorts of things about JonBenet Ramsey, a child that was murdered. This supermarket serves the wealthiest people in Atlanta so it's not like we can blame this on ignorance. No, Americans are simply fascinated with other people's drug addictions and even death and this sleeze is in full view of children. Yet we have to save our children's "innocence" by removing "penisbreath" from E.T. I guess they just figured it wasn't worth the hassles they would get from gay rights groups.
