Apple this week released Update 5 for Java on Mac OS X 10.5, a release that plugs 15 security holes. The Mac maker said the update will give users improved reliability, security, and compatibility for Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and later.

The update will upgrade all three platforms: Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_15, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_20, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_22. The updates of J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 are said to support all Intel and PowerPC-based Macs, while Java SE 6 is available on 64-bit Intel-based Macs only.

Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5 is available for download direct from Apple or via Software Update. It is a 161.35MB file.
