The iPhone is a better phone for a few reasons. 1. I actually like using the touch keyboard (no extra thickness and only there when you need it). 2. It's an Apple device, so it works perfectly with iTunes. Better battery life than the Pre, though this wouldn't be a deal-breaker. Better OS, richer API app set. Better looking, and a world of third party accessories. Sometimes I do wonder how Apple managed to get so much right with the iPhone - as so many things could have gone wrong really, from before it existed.

Agh. I think they did a few wrongs with iTunes, to be honest.

Not being able to physically delete song if you don't let it organize your music folder the way it likes? Why?

Not being able to monitor and apply changes to music folder? WHY?

My biggest problem with iPhone is not being able to sync music with WMP - faster, monitoring media folders, have folder view (darn useful from time to time)... for apps and other things, it is OK.

I dropped my iPhone 3G 8GB today. Hope nothing is wrong with it. From the outside, looks fine. ...I would consider Sony Ericsson (my iPhone is out of warranty after 1 year (from Singapore)) but the iPhone does what I want, and I did a run with Runkeeper app yesterday, very nice...

Features aside, the iPhone 3G (I don't know about 3GS) overall seems to have a high build quality and withstands scratches, drops alright... AFAIK and as far as I hope...

My iPhone 3G 8GB seems okay after this morning's drop. Yeah, I bought it in Singapore from someone who bought it from Singtel. Singapore, Malaysia sell factory unlocked phones. No evil locking allowed. AFAIK.

The iPhone 3GS is really nowhere to be seen in Malaysia (30-40 day wait times are being quoted and still a huge backlog)... Only a dripfeed of phones coming in compared to the demand.

I'm looking forward to the 4G anyway now.

What sort of price are Apple charging in Singapore for non-locked iPhones? I can, and have been able to for ages, to walk into any local TelCo and choose black/white, 16/32 from stock; I'm guessing it's lack of demand rather than over-supply.

Curious, which country are you in? Definitely lack of demand in your area, I think.

For Singapore you have to sign a contract, when the break-contract fees are factored in you get the phone for essentially about $500 to $700 USD

Nonetheless, even in Singapore it is hard to get an iPhone 3GS. From their website:

SingTel iPhone 3GS Bulletin Board - Important Reading*

    Announcement:

Thank you for your patience and interest in the iPhone 3GS.

Due to the overwhelming demand for the iPhone 3GS, all available stocks are sold out.

We expect new stocks in October 2009. Please check this website for updates.

We appreciate your understanding and support.

    Regards,

    The SingTel Team

For Asia it is all very strange, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia all have the potential to sell 250,000 to half a million iPhone 3GS in total. But now that the model is fading from its launch hype, that number continues to dwindle while stock supply is constrained.

And how the F88k is Apple going to scale production to supply potentially millions of iPhones to China now that *that* deal is signed?

Jersey, but I think the lack of demand is down to price. While you can walk in and by non-locked iPhones from stock, with no contract, they cost $1,275.00 compared to your $700.00!

From what Telcos can you get the iPhone 3GS there in Jersey? You don't have the usual O2 contract dealio like in the UK, I take it...

We've 3 Telcos; Jersey Telecom. Airtel-Vodafone(linked to, but seperate to Vodafone UK) and Sure(Cable&Wireless). They all do the iPhone non-locked in all flavours at pretty much identical prices for the handset only, and similar, but as impossible to compare deals, under various tariffs.

    5) Palm Pre

Which would you choose and why?

    HTC Hero running Android.

I'm in Singapore and Malaysia on holiday these few days. I went to Singtel and checked out the 3GS and it costs S$848 on their cheapest plan there. For a 32GB 3GS, it would cost S$1548 with a $25/month data plan while on the $192/month data plan, it would cost a whooping $4608 ) and Malaysia is via Maxis if I'm not wrong.. All iPhones can only be bought via the official Singtel/ Maxis stores in Singapore/Malaysia ... So I guess a plan is required.. Here in Connecticut, a 32GB 3GS costs as much as a 17" MBP!!!

Erm... I think you've missed something. The Singapore iPhone 3GS costs an equivalent of ~USD $480 on the cheapest plan of ~USD $25/ month. You get it free on the ~USD $150/ month plan. It's a two year commitment and I'm not sure what happens if you break your contract. You could get the Singtel iPhone 3GS 32GB from eBay Singapore contacts, they are selling around S$1,500 which is ~USD $1,100.

In Malaysia you almost used to be able to buy the iPhone 3GS outright (for tourists) at RM 3,000 which is equivalent to ~USD $850. But there's simply no stock in Malaysia right now, they are only taking backorders for iPhones on 1 or 2 year plans.

Stick to AT&T ... You also have warranty coverage, if you buy an overseas unit you got no warranty coverage... You Americans are so lucky... at least in terms of the price of the iPhone.
