I'm torn for "... to a Rock song." Best overall, though, I can tell you for sure.

The harpsichord solo in the Allegro Movement of Bach's brandenburg concerto 5. Makes that solo from Eruption sound like a slow stroll through the park.

Beginning riff of "How Soon is Now?" by The Smiths.

Beginning of "Gimme Shelter" by the Stones.

Beginning riff of "Eighties" by Killing Joke.

Off the top of my head...

    Tonton,

While I agree there are better Smiths opening riffs (Marr is a guitar hero of mine) HSIN's opening is so bloody distinctive and recognizable--like "Layla." That's why I chose it.

Personally, I prefer the opening riff of "This Charming Man."

I saw The Smiths 14 years ago--and Johnny Marr was tremendous. One of the best live shows I've seen.

I got to see them twice, first time on the Meat IS Murder Tour, absolutely incredible show. One of two times I've been at a show where they brought up the houselights, but people were going so nuts the band had to come back out and play another couple of songs.
