I think there was a f*** up somewhere with these new iMacs. Apple had to release new models for the holiday season, and the 27" is a stunner. They need(ed) two things, either 1080p rental/downloads on iTunes Store, and more widely available, or Blu-Ray. Maybe something fell through at the last minute.

I would say both would be the key if Apple is smart enough.

Offer 1080p content on iTunes Store and a Blu-Ray drive in at least the 27" models.

    Maybe then everybody wins...

I would say Apple need to add blu-ray accross the entire line, and soon. There is a strong case for it everywhere.

In the laptops - I can't imagine I'm alone in having bought nothing but blu-ray for a few years now. I've given away nearly all my old DVDs, so if I want to play a movie on the road I have to either buy a DRM laiden download (I'd really, really rather not), pirate something, or take some BDs with me. The latter would be fine on a Dell etc, but not so on an Apple laptop.

iMac - So it has the ultimate screen eh? How about some ultimate video to go with that? I'm thinking 1080p at 45mbits. iTunes 720p 5mbits downloads... not so much. I only own one HDTV, which my wife likes to use too, meaning I wouldn't mind being able to watch a movie or two upstairs on my PC. I could do that on a Dell, but not so on an iMac.

Apple TV - I'm all for digital rentals, they're a much cheaper way to see films I'll only watch once, but the range available is poor, and the picture and sound quality is very limited. The choice of films available on BD is far superior, and of course the PQ and AQ is absolutely light years ahead. Apple TV has been a failure so far for many reasons, but adding a model with a BD drive would surely be a huge boost for it. (as would adding 1080p iTunes downloads, and adding support for common streaming services)

So Jobs hates blu-ray. He needs to get over it, as the format isn't going away.

Yeah, I think Apple should just accept the facts of life and start offering Blu-Ray drives and Blu-Ray burning, including iMovie support, as options on Macs.

As for the AppleTV, well, I don't think they need to do anything to drastic with it. If they are happy with it as a "hobby"....

I think the 27" iMac is "designed for Blu Ray" in the sense that it's a big screen for a personal desktop computer, and it's LED-backlit with a great IPS panel. Hence Blu Ray is absolutely the best video you can enjoy on it, besides 3D games 2560x1440 which isn't really possible anyway on the iMac 27".

I don't think Blu Ray is one of the critical purposes of the iMac 27" but it is a very natural fit to use and enjoyment of the iMac 27".

Apple cant offer 1080p content in the store until they are sure that this content can be streamed to AppleTV. Right now, its impossible for 2 reasons: hardware limitations in the AppleTV and data transfer limitations. I use my AppleTV to stream home-brewed 720p m4v video files over N-wireless from my iMac to my AppleTV, which are about 12 feet away and not separated by a wall. I get hiccups. The video freezes every now and then. Fast forward and rewind are buggy. But the video still looks great (way better than that low-framerate crap that passes for 720p on iTunes).

1080p video is not necessarily the future of digital video. Extract a 1080p video to a file container with no compression, and you get (in some cases) a 30GB file. Its unweildly. Reduce the bitrate and downgrade the resolution to 720p, and it looks great at only 5GB or less. I wish I didnt have to reduce the bit rate as much as I do (becuase of the aforementioned hardware limitations), but it looks great regardless.

My two concerns are: First, Apple needs to up the capability of the AppleTV and mobile devices to handle a more robust bitrate and allow HD video, respectively. Second, I don't need an OEM bluray player, but at least give me an update to the DVD player app so I can play the discs with my Pioneer external. I think that would be a reasonable compromise for the early adopters.
