Droid which is a Verizon term for all their Google android phone and Verizon had no say in how those phones were designed which is a good thing for consumers. Also, Verizon do not want consumer to distinguish hardware manufactures that is why all the phones are call Droid so when you walk in a ask for a Droid you get what they have in stock which could be any number of suppliers.
But as they said the honeymoon is not over yet, you will start hearing the complaints.
One of which I heard a number of times recently... Software updates are pushed to the phone whether you like it not, then you get a message telling you to reboot the phone to update if you do, the next time the phone boots you will see they change things about how you had the phone set up. I have heard people complaining that they do not like how the software updates reset or change how people have the phone configured.
Update my iphone a couple of times and never had this issue other than when the update included new features and I choice to do the update when I wanted. I do not update right away I let the fouls do it first and see what problem they run into. Oh those automatic push updates if not done right can brick the phone, won't they be lovely when your out on the road.
WOW! You really have no idea what you're talking about...
The DROID is a single smartphone, as in the one manufactured by Motorola that utilizes Google's Android 2.X.X mobile operating system and runs one the Verizon network.
Yes, Verizon also carries another Android-based phone, the Droid Eris, but it runs on an earlier version if Google Android, and is manufactured by HTC, and has no hardware keyboard.
Hint: You really should at least make some effort to educate yourself on these matters before embarking on such a lengthy tirade so inundated with errors.
Precisely why I want an unlocked phone so the bastards can't do that. My guess is having a non verizon firmware will prevent that, because that is annoying. To be fair win mob phones did that too on Att. Ironically, the old Treo 700w had to be updated manually (on verizon at a time where 3G was new), at a time when other winmob phones didn't need manual updating (Palm sucks).
From what I understand if you on VZ network you will get the push updates, I am not sure about a GSM network, most of the complaints I have heard so far haven been on the Version android phones. These updates are not always a Verizon change it could be the manufactures change as well.

HINT: Before you make statements like that you should know who you talking to... Let put this way, I work for one of the manufacturers....
Driod is Verizon licensed name not a Motorola or HTC It is Verizon plan to market all Android based phones as Droid phones, they may have various other designators as well will be know as Droids, kind of like the iphone.
Verizon plan is not to have any one manufacture have that much control over what phones they offer the public, they do not want a company like Apple controlling the market. Verizon wants to dictate the terms in all cases. So when the unknowing customer walks in and ask for Droid the sales person will supply them the one that Verizon deems at the time the one they want to push or has incentives to push.
