this is bottom line for me and Apple. I can not recommend in future to anyone else to buy Apple computers. (and I did convert at least 50 person to Mac side in last year or two)
So the OS and computer had nothing to do with it?
They switched only because you were so compelling?
Hmmmmm. Anecdotally only - no screen issues here - although the HD bit the dust last year - replaced it with a Seagate Barracuda 7200 250GB for right around 50$US. And swapping the HD was not exactly plug-n-play (you who have cracked the G5 iSight know what I'm talking about), but it is nowhere near the worst case situation I've experienced.
So I can't speak to the numbers of reports of screen failures but the plaintiff was a clueless moron or had a careless or neglectful counsel advising him. I'm thinking he filed on his own after reading "Lawsuits for Dummies".
The white iMac screen issues are quite numerous. The lawsuit would provide some compensation to those that had to pay to get it repaired *after* the 3rd year extended warranty ended. Or, Apple would announce some sort of replacement deal like the defective batteries/ chargers/ what not.
I think Apple should be held accountable. Sounds very strange why the plaintiff didn't make the right moves to adjust it so it's like more of a normal class action lawsuit? Then it might have some traction. You have some sort of announcement then people produce their receipts or serial numbers and they sign up to be recipients of damages, if any, paid by Apple.
Who the hell expects Apple to pay damages to everyone that ever bought an iMac, whether they had problems or not?
My 2 cents.
Er, I mean $1.00
(Which is what I got from that PayPal class action lawsuit several years ago)
Gee, another immigrant who thinks he is going to get rich by filing a lawsuit. This our image in the world, and it is believed. This seems doubly true with lawsuits filed against Apple!
I know, I know ... Plenty of ridiculous suits by American born idiots, too.
Thank you. I was initially offended by that immigrant rant.
Secession? Well, I'll check out them videos to see what you're on about. LOL love how that John Ainsworth guy is clearly using a Mac and Keynote during his presentations. Edit: That's some hardcore fundamentalist stuff there though. Not sure I agree with that, but I'm not going to derail this thread. Edit2: Some interesting non-religious stuff he talked about though.
for me this is pretty unacceptable, 50% fail rate. So price of Mac is 1500-2000 euro + Apple care at least because hardware is pure crap and there is good chance that something will go wrong with iMac in lifespan of 3 years. And after 3rd year you are on your own !!!
(beside, my girlfriend eMac failed after 3rd year - bad capacitors but luckily I could replace them easily )

People do not want to switch to Mac:
1) because it is expensive (1300-2000 euros) (compare to PC: 400-600 euro (both are computers as people see it))
2) because they are "afraid" of new (to move from Windows to Mac OS X)
so somebody need to convince them that it is a good move!
If I convince somebody to buy Mac for 1500-2000 euros and than same Mac die after e.g. 13 months (out of warranty) than I am fool!
and like I said:
- I have two 24", C2D 2,16GHz white iMac (2006.) and GPU die on one

(out-of-waranty, I need to pay 250euro for GeForce 7300 256MB in 2009.
- I had 6 Alu iMac 24" so far and 3 of them had problem with screen
