I am so excited about the new tablet, just as much as you guys, but I'm having two holdups....
1. I'm having a difficult time explaining what it's really for to my friends and family. When I tried to tell a friend of mine how excited i was about the end of this month, I was having difficulty explaining myself.. We both have 15" MacBook Pros and iPhones. When I told my friend what the tablet was all about and he said "Ok, well I don't need that, who needs that? We have our iPhones and MacBooks? Something in the middle just doesn't make sense." In a way, I understand him, but I know I would still love a tablet, but if he feels that way, how many others do, too. And with that being said, I'm wondering what Apple has up their sleeves to compensate for this?
2. What is the magic feature of this "tablet"? What makes it a hot commodity. What makes it worth buying if you already have an iPhone, and a Mac? It has to be something we've never seen, not just something we all expect to be released with all the features we are listing in this forum... It has to do something else...
I could see apple offering 3G support as an option. But I think for the most part they are going to look at a device like this as more of a home/office kind of device. In other words not something like an iPhone you are going to have in your pocket while at a restaurant or something. So no need for it to have internet outside of a wifi hotspot.
Given Apple's track record of the Apple TV, this is unlikely. Maybe the folks at ATVflash will step in.
I have very low expectations of Apple in this regard, and I agree that it will take a third-party to solve the problem. Unfortunately, the more iPhone-like this device is, the more locked-down it will be against such a solution.
I haven't had time to read this entire thread, so this may have already been discussed. My apologies if so.
Because of the rather large screen @10 or more inches, I am concerned that it would get scratched in a backpack or briefcase. I'd like to see an extremely thin hinged cover to protect the glass.
The cover could also incorporate a virtual keyboard. It could also be folded back to be a stand for the iSlate.
The NYT claims iWork might benefit form Apple's acquisition of Fingerworks and be a multitouch app for the tablet. This would certainly win a few hearts.

Personally I'd like to see the followng features:
Long battery life
10" mutlitouch screen
Pressure sensitive stylus support
SDXC card slot
OSX
Priced at $599 or less
Broad media codec support- it needs to be able to play every video file a Mac can play. Not just h.264 and Apple's .mov garbage.

If Apple is creating a product to fit between the iPhone & iBook, it might be more feasible to see a
7-9" iSlate priced between $500-$750. And hopefully that custom chip they're building will give the
iSlate 12+ hours of battery time.

Ten inches would be awesome.

iWork is a given, but more excitingly, so is iLife!
Think about it? iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, iWeb, iDVD (using DVD drive sharing like MBA). These apps beg for Multitouch treatment.
Ten inches would be awesome.
I do believe that that is what she said.
