So you your against R&D because it costs money? Unicorns and fairydust didn't magically put the iPad in Steve Job's hand. Hold up, who paid for that special event? Could it have been Apple? Seriously, what could you possibly have against companies doing R&D?
Please don't put words in my mouth.
The R&D for "search" itself is just the beginning. Designing and building a product or on-line service is one thing, particularly if it's not being monetized, except its unsustainable if it isn't monetized. Apple has lots of experience with both hardware and software product development. Building on iTMS is well established, too, and will only become more extensive with the iBooks store. But Apple has no track record with anything like a search engine for revenue generation.
For a point of reference, MSN Search has been given new life since being reborn as Bing. They've grown in marketshare for 8th months in a row now. They are now at 11.3%.

And you think researching the possibility is the wrong way to go?
Apple had no experience in phones and now they make more profit than any other handset maker in the world. How about them Apples. There will always be someone with a better idea that will come along. No one stays on top forever. Google took the search engine market from others so claiming that Apple couldn't possibly turn a profit with their own is completely silly.

I asked you not to put words in my mouth.

I'm amazed that your mind would even go to such a place.
Perhaps you could stay on topic, something you have yet to do in this thread by attempting to discredit every pro R&D comment I've made but then state you aren't anti-R&D. If you can't answer a post directly (or maturely, see above) perhaps this type of discussion isn't for you.
Gotta love your lack of vision. Remember Yahoo and Lycos and Excite. People said the same thing you said "who's gonna use a new search engine when others already own the market." .
Exactly. Altavista was my favourite for a long time. I don't know even if they exist any more. Nothing stays still forever.
I have an iphone i have a mac and i use google in both. You can configure you gmail account in mail (mac) in a ichat, google is inside mac os in all ways and apple never show concers about that before. The only problem that apple have with google start when google launch android get worst in android 2.0 and even worst with nexus one phone...
In my view apple have no interest for now in create a web search engine, everyone now that google make almost all their money in ads coming from trafic so i think they will always need ways to bring trafic to them and if paying apple or microsft they are able to get this goals its a fair aproach.
There is a lot of different types of advertisement and google ads are just the most chipper apple have to bet in media and the new cloud itunes that i dont know how is going to work because they bought lala when i always thought they could buy spotify (spotify is free in spain with advertisement) thats its an amazing tecnhology and with amazing potencial to advartisements (voice advertising is mutch better paid than adds) and in future crate a system like voddler when you can buy or see tv show in your itunes. Itunes have something like 120 millions on user world wide who is the company dont want to advirtise with videos and voice when the impact in the custumer its mutch bigger. apple could make a lot of money with the new itunes. and they dont want google create a media tool in their phones with similar tecnhonoly.
the only company that makes any money in traditional search is the #1 search engine. Traditional search is much more mature than it was in 1999 -- the search companies back then did not understand really what search was. Google did, and still does, and has $20 billion and huge margins to protect it. Microsoft, the most entrenched SW company in the world is finding that it costs many many billions of dollars to try and make $1 in traditional search. I do not those are the kinds of bets Apple traditionally makes. Yahoo makes money from its content properties, from display, not from search. Google has the only model to make money in traditional search, and if you want to play in traditional search, first you'll have to beat Microsoft, then you'll have to beat Google. To make $1. It's a terribly ugly business to even think about getting into, it is nothing like selling SW or HW. You have to be #1 or a close #2 to make a profit.
Apple can play on the margins with Itunes, they should have a long time ago, that should be a web based store, and it would be one of the larger search sites around. Music, movies, TV Shows, Books, along with a social component. These things are no brainers that they haven't done. Talking about things like indexing stuff outside their own ecosystem is kind of goofy, when they haven't even done the obvious web and cloud based things within it, yet.

How much profit does Microsoft make on bing?

Turns out, designing and building prototype doorstops is actually pretty easy.
Correct. Several of Apple's competitors do it on a regular basis.
