Actually, I think Microsoft got Bing and Zune from watching old 1960's batman episodes. Maybe their next product will be called the Zlonk or the Glipp.
Rather ambitious. Considering the Zune HD has been out for almost 8 months now, and they've released barely a handful of marketplace apps for it.
That's the problem with Microsoft; they put out a product with all these gee-whiz features, abilities, in all sorts of colors with customized graphics, spreading it out real thick on everything it will be capable of in the future, then let it stagnate. The Zune HD was stillborn, and they are already talking about releasing a new version?
I almost puke every time I see company videos which discuss using our internal apps on a Windows Mobile PDA. Heck, no Windows Mobile PDA is listed on our extremely limited supported device list. They're all Windows Mobile Not Very Smartphones... I'm just waiting for the Windows Desktop version of the apps (which they say folks want). They have been *lying* about the iPhone being incompatible with getting signatures (can't do it and no stylus), which is a good way to have folks *not* ask for an iPhone version. I wonder when the Big Man will get around to firing those liars after he buys something for over $100 at an Apple Store...
"i" took off after the success of iMac - iBook, iPod, iPhone, iPad (one hopes). But if the iMac had failed they wouldn't have stuck with the moniker or line extensions.
I agree with the earlier post - kill "Zune." Congeal their consumer electronics "ecosystem" into one brand. Without going all X-Box, X-Phone, X-Pad...
They drive me crazy... the iPod wasn't perfect, but Apple continued to refine the idea, over and over. Microsoft seems obsessed with cleaning the slate every few years.
Well it certainly is for those who appreciate outstanding design/functionality, and have the intellectual aptitude to actually use the device to its full potential.
Maybe not. My son is switching the company he works for (the largest company in their industry) from a largely paper process to a total electronic system using iPod Touches and iPads and in the process, switching from Windows to Macs. When it comes to hardware and software, Apple has the best enterprise solutions. Business isn't dumber than consumers. They're starting to catch on.
You know, my company also relies on iPads to do most of our business. Currently, we're sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing until the things are actually available. Where did your son's company pick some up so fast?
The thing that MS has done in the past is to release their newest Zune OS on to older devices. So it wouldn't surprise me if they released a verson of WP7 for the current Zune HD. It's not going to have all the features the phone would, but then an iPod Touch lacks a lot of extras that the iPhone has. So it won't have the camera and obviously the three buttons is out, you could probably still get the OS on the device and fit it into the new ecosystem.
This would appear to contradict the claim from AI that MS was going to sell a "Zune Phone" that's incompatible with WinMo7. Instead, it would appear that they are just going to abandon the old Zune, and make the new Zune a WinMo7 device. That actually makes much more sense -- they are getting their house in order.
I continue to believe that MS is a larger competitive threat to Apple than Google. Google is way out of its league here.

I have been waiting to to see if Redmond was going to get serious about the mobile space, and it appears they are. I think it is wise of them to cut their losses on WinMo and focus on building out Metro as the singular and more robust WinP7 strategy. The only thing that still massively hampers their programs is the still relatively toxic corporate culture (you think Apple is bad!), that keeps their teams from strategic partnerships when they are needed, not just critical (as in the Vista/Win7 rewrite). Time of course will tell.

OMG, that's the funniest thing I've read in ages.

Glad I sold mine when I did...

So if anything, the (brilliant) ZUNE HD UI inspired WinPho7S, not the reverse.
But I thought the Zune HD was so great.

(that's Newton backwards for you slower 'folk)
They ought to focus on the few areas where they compete well and focus on them instead of wasting money on hopeless trinkets.
So let me get this right. Zune, HD, 2, with Windows, Mobile, version 7....???
Uhhhhhgggg, puleazzzz just stop Microsoft.... seriously, stop it now.
So, let me get this right. OS X, OS X Leopard, OS X Snow Leopard, what's next OS X Snow Leopard Bhutan?
Please Just Stop Apple - Seriously Just Stop It Now - Oy Vey!

Oh...wait, was that meant as a serious statement?
If I were a MSFT stockholder, I'd be pissed at the company's clumsy attempts to insert themselves into markets that don't want them.
They ought to focus on the few areas where they compete well and focus on them instead of wasting money on hopeless trinkets.
Can't the same thing be said about Apple when they entered the phone arena? I remember quite a few people saying the same thing about them.
Micro$oft has just as much right to enter the market as anyone else. Even when all the cards are stacked against them.

If I were an MS stockholder I would sell it all NOW.

Uhhh.... what enterprise solutions?
