"To reach consumers, Ballmer said Microsoft will open three more retail stores: in Bellevue Square, the Mall of America in Minnesota and Oakbrook Center in suburban Chicago."
Answering the earlier question, yes the London Underground museum (and shop) are in Covent Garden. But you'd have a hard time finding anywhere in central London that isn't easily reachable by tube.
There are currently 4 http://store.microsoft.com/Locations. They are 2 in Cali (Old Mission and Wale's Vagina) and 1 each in its suburbs of Arizona and Colorado.
BTW I Would love to visit MS store, especially if they had knowledgeable workers. Shopping for PCs for family and friends is terrible because selection in Best Buy et al is terrible and staff is technologically retarded, pushy and unhelpful. Yea, you can shop online, but some people just want to see the compns in person to understand what screen size, matte/unmatte, keyboard, slots, weight and so on they like.
Their stores look really nice, more business-like. It will be more attractive when WP7 arrive I'm sure. They're also showing off Surface which is kinda cool.
But from the pictures it's kinda empty.
Really? I'd kind of like to see the Surface, but chances are I won't be travelling to any of those few stores anytime soon. It's too bad that never caught on as a product to be used in the real world...
Think the store looks great but cant believe the Apple logo hanging outside! Looks great viewed the right way- but terrible design to have it back-to-front from the other angle.
Think it would have been much better had the logo cutout been an illuminated white solid, with the logo the right way round from both sides...
lol no. Old mission is English for Mission Viejo, while Ron Burgandy (Anchorman movie) translated San Diego as "Whale's Vagina" (instead of Saint Diego). The name kinda stuck, but you are in LA, you should know this.

Damn it of course they would go to western burbs. Where is the love for northern burbs or chicago itself? We have an apple store after all.
The Tube is what the London Underground is informally called by Londoners, including Transport for London who operate it. The tunnels look like (are) large round tubes.
Oh yes, it's crazy in there. There always seems to be about 50 Apple staff on the floor but the queues for everything are still very long.
I think London could easily accommodate another 2-3 stores.
Are you thinking in addition to the five stores already present? (Whilst Kingston isn't labelled as a London store it is within the Greater London area and does have a London phone number).
I've been to three of the five stores in London (Regent St, Westfield and Brent Cross) and they are all quite busy, not just around the demo units but with people purchasing at the tills. I'm very impressed by the conduct of the Apple Store staff; they are all welcoming, they know their stuff and are helpful. It makes it a joy to visit their stores. So it comes to me as no surprise that they're doing well and consequently Apple is doing well too.
As for the success of Microsoft's retail endeavours, well the fact there are currently more Apple stores in London alone than Microsoft stores in the USA speaks for itself...
Compared to Apple's Global Store programme, Microsoft's efforts are no more than a retail rounding error.
Actually, my understanding was that this will now be the largest Apple Store at this point; Period.
I believe it will now be the largest Apple store in the world as Regent Street has always held that title (although it did lose it briefly but then it expanded it's first floor (second floor for Americans) and got the title back). Only problem is the Covent Garden store is going to be totally rammed every minute of the day as it's bad enough trying to walk through there daily with all the tourists!

Ah... look like they still keep going.
It's less than a mile and an easy walk, so yes.

Thanks. Sounds really good.

There's a place called 'Wale's Vagina'?!

Mac, iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, iTunes store, retail stores - sounds like we need a second stool.
And there was me thinking that the Regents Street store was very big! Cool, can't wait to visit it.

Covent Garden is a cool spot and easily reached by Tube. In fact, isn't the Underground retail store there?
"The Tube"? Is this Futurama?

I believe it was an Anchorman reference. One of my favourite movies....

Yes. I'd vote for the City, Islington and Stratford (once the new shopping centre next to the Olympic Park is built).
