More like anybody, not just youth, who don't want a costly cell phone contract. I have a cell and a Touch because I'm a light cell-phone user and didn't feel like dropping excessive money every month to maintain the phone.
But to insist that the Touch can not ever be a product that develops independent of the iPhone is rather rigid thinking that is more to be expected from competitors, not Apple. If the idea is that a product can never move away from a particular formula, we wouldn't have the Touch. After all, the iPod started off life as a music player and being that, one would have thought that there never would have been an iPod with a 3.5-inch screen.
Apple has been morphing the iPod line for years and yet now, evidently, we're expected to believe that the die is cast and no further alterations are allowed.
Perhaps in a few weeks we will not see a dramatic form-factor shift with the Touch but it's not rational, based on the iPod line's history, to think Apple will never alter the formula. As market conditions dictate, changes will happen. Bank on it.
