    He was just doing research

If you are referring to Apple, Inc. it is company. Of course they don't allow total freedom of speech. If you are an employee and don't like that fact, go work elsewhere.

People can put whatever they want on their iToys.

Apple does not have to provide a way to do it though.

Ah, what happened to the days when Apple executives would just hack the phone system with their home-built blue boxes?

Apple's getting classier by the day.

So these apps do not violate App Store policies. They are guilty of poor taste, low value, and low utility and being associated with the director of the App Store. Is that a scandal?

Were the "sounds" computer generated, or the author recorded them in the bathroom? If the later is the case, he truly is an artist.

Look, a company can hire and associate with anyone they want. Question is, should a company, or should _I_, be more proud of a fella with the credentials above, or with someone who'd created something imaginative and constructive--there are thousands of apps like that on the app store.

I think it's embarrassing for apple. If this were about a key microsoft exec people here would be frantic as they had a field day with it.

    Two things:

    1) Apple can't tell me what apps to install on my phone

    2) I can't tell Apple what to sell on its store.

A lot of the apps I run come from places other than Apple's app store, like flash for example.

I want to know what this guy learned in college, and if he used any of that knowledge to get ahead in life.

That would be a real scandal!

I would imagine that Jobs is not pleased. This is a key Apple executive who is responsible for making sure that iApps do not violate Apple's high standards. From the description and screen shots, this app is crude, vulgar, and reflects a serious lack of maturity.

It's not a scandal, it is funny. It would be like putting Larry Flynt as the head of the FCC board in charge of censoring American TV broadcasts. Actually, probably a good thing in terms of loosening them up, but it is ironic to put a guy with that background in charge of the decency police.

Nothing to read here, move along.

Must be a very slow news day.

Except he is in charge of enforcing very prudish content rules. Which is fine. But it is pretty asinine to assert that his personal interesting in porn, escorts, piss and farts somehow makes him better at determining what is appropriate. What, are you saying that because he follows escorts and porn stars he can tell an appropriate nipple from an inappropriate nipple better than someone else? Does his experience with fart apps make him better able to judge a high quality fart app from the crappy ones? His experience as a developer and director might make him a good choice, but to try and claim his personal interests or the type of juvenile apps he created make him a better censor is pretty lame.

No one said this was a bad thing. It is humorous. You know, fox in the hen house and that sort of thing.

I surprised no one has jumped on the conflict of interest issue.

    Person writes iPhone app.

Person makes $$$ (or prestige or gets some sort of benefit) from iPhone app.

Person is now put in charge of approving or disapproving other apps written by other people that may compete with his app(s).

The second Shoemaker was hired by Apple, any app he had anything to do with should have been pulled from the App store. He currently has a personal financial incentive to disapprove apps that compete with his existing apps.
