[quote]Buy a Power Mac G4 and an Apple flat-panel** display between January 28 and March 31, 2002, and get a picture-perfect deal. You?ll save on your choice of a 15-inch or 17-inch Apple Studio Display or the breathtaking 22-inch Apple Cinema Display.

So, since this update was timed pretty well with the Crystal Clear bundle, what does that mean for March?

It means NOTHING. Read that? NOTHING AT ALL.

Guys, G5's won't come until MWNY at least. Blah blah blah, first everybody is sure we're gonna get Pentium busting PowerMacs at MWSF at 1.6GHz, they don't arrive. Then everybody thinks they're gonna come today. What do we get? A 133MHz speedbump of the exact same chip.

Nothing breathtaking is going to come from Apple's Pro line in a long, long time. Apple goes slow and steady here. Next rev, we're probably going to get 1.2GHz PowerMacs, tops.

    Very pessimistic, arent we?

The G5 may be a big deal, but then again no it wont because we wont see anything big from Apple's pro line for a long time.

    Not big, I mean breathtaking.

let me go on record and say this is the dumbest marketing move apple has made in recent history.

They should have just cut the damn displays down to 499, 699, and 1999 and forgot about this rebate crap. then they wouldn't have had to post that dumb March 31 date.

Because of doing that now everyone is going to wait (or at least a good majority) and speculate what's going to be released in April or late March.

I'm not saying nothing will happen then, I think something will, but this was a dumb move on apple's behalf

It's not necessarily a dumb marketing move. The promo says it only works on the monitors that are bought with the Powermac. So for people that buy a monitor without a computer they have to pay top dollar, smart move IMHO.

I agree with applenut. Just cut the prices, or cut the prices when you buy a monitor at the same time as the CPU. This rebate stuff is bad news. When I helped my brother order his DP G4/500 from the Apple education store, we were told that he would get money off of his display as well WHILE we were on the phone with the rep. Instead of getting the 'instant rebate', however, we got a form to fill out. I sent it in with all of the requirements, and got a letter back saying that we were ineligible because we bought the machine from the education store.

I was finally able to get the money, but getting it was hard. I hope Apple isn't still making the same mistakes with rebates as they were back then.

Maybe, but alot of users that see the ending date will not automatically think that new machines will be coming out that day. We might, but the more-than-average Joe will just get what he can at the time. The people who will go crazy about end dates for rebates are the losers on Apple rumor BBS's (like me).

Nobody goes crazy about end dates. If they are going to buy a computer they will buy what is available, not wait to see what becomes available. I guess I shouldnt have said that on a rumor site, you know be realistic.

let me ask you? how many people walk into an apple store or compusa and just by the display? not many, you know why? because of ADC. If you buy a mac you buy the display with it if you want it. the market for Apple's ADC displays to existing users is SMALL.

really? sure doesn't seem that way as whenever there is speculation for a new product apple's sales tank. sure takes a bit more than AI for sales to tank.

Oh, I couldnt be more wrong? What company do you know of that doesnt need to get work done? If Apple customers need power then they will buy the available computer from APPLE.

Get a life and dont worry about apple promotions. Jesus Christ would roll over in his grave and make you kiss his ass if he knew you gripe about every little detail in life.

Apple made a smart business decision with this promotion

If there is a small market for those who have a Mac that buy an Apple display then why not charge their asses?!

And because more people buy the display with the monitor and Apple is being NICE then why does it matter if they give you a price break?

Hate to rain on the parade here, but not everyone is willing to wait for G5s and even when they DO arrive, ALL of the current software we have will be running in 32 bit mode, so there won't actually be any immediate difference.

the big differences Apple has yet to implement are faster RAM and system bus. THAT is the big story, not so much the G5.

My point here is that it is an excellent time to buy G4 systems that will be extremely POWERFUL workstations for the vast majority of creative tasks with the exception of maybe high end 3d graphics and 2d animation. The people in the latter two fields should probably wait. Everyone else should be just thrilled.

With Photoshop X due out soon, you telling me you wouldn't want a dual 1Ghz G4 with an Nvidia 4mx?

    Duh.

    Get a grip folks.

Maybe it's a message? They're telling the people who are holding out "Ok, we don't have it yet, but it's coming soon and here's something to tide over the people who NEED to buy now"

Anybody thought of that? It's not like they were getting a ton of tower sales anyway.

If it was a message they would have just wrote a message at the bottom of the Powermac store page that said, "Ok, we don't have it yet, but it's coming soon and here's something to tide over the people who NEED to buy now."

Did you ever think of that? stop being an Apple conspiracy theorist.

What urks me more than anything is not the lackluster processor speeds Motorola is producing, but the fact that Apple will not get their asses in gear and release a damn faster bus. WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! Why does EVERY other PC manufacturer have an available DDR or Rambus memory option with a 400 or 333 Mhz bus and Apple is stuck with a 133 Mhz? This is crap and there are NO excuses because the technology is already there. Its great that we get a GF4 before PC users... Great... but what about the frickin bus?

All I have to say is that this better be the LAST upgrade before a kick ass bus(hypertransport perhaps?) come out in a new PowerMac.

    Nuf Said.

On second thought this had nothing to do with the display prices... sorry.

power macs only sell to companies now?

and these upgrades are NOT significant enough to make quicksilver owners upgrade.

uhh... a computer does not equal life. you really need to learn the difference

Anybody want to geuss the G5 clock speeds?

    IF it's March:

    1.2 1.4 1.6 Ghz

IF it's between March and July:

    1.2 1.6 1.8 Ghz

    IF it's July:

    1.4 1.8 2.0 Ghz..

I read somewhere that the G5 would scale at 400Mhz increments, but that could be fluf)

I also think that over the next 3 months of so we'll see a

    1Ghz PB Ti (apollo)

    Polimer battery tech from iPod

    higher resolution screen (1600x1024)

    superdrive (it's possible!)

I think that this update is going to be like the B&W G3 update. We will probably see the next Generation PowerMac at MWTY or at MWNY. My guess is MWNY and it will be the G5 running at 1.2 1.6 1.8 Ghz or even 1.2 1.4 1.6 Ghz. The latter is probably most likely.

The original G4 was released in September 1999, according to Apple history.

Anyone remember where? Like was it it a trade show - seybold maybe?
