Several Apple fans camped out for the release, with the coveted first place in line going to Yu Zhong Hui, who lined up after 5 a.m. Thursday. "When you want something, you have to pay a price. The price I paid is that everyone has had to see me wait out here," Yu said, according to the report.
Last week, China Unicom announced that over 50,000 users preordered the device on the first day that preorders were offered, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The announcement alleviated analyst's fears that China's lucrative gray market, which bypasses official channels to bring devices in from overseas, had cooled consumer interest for the phone.
After last year's launch of the iPhone in China, China Unicom saw an underwhelming 5,000 new subscribers in the iPhone's first week of availability. The muted sales may have come as a result of regulatory complications that prevented the official China iPhone from launching with Wi-Fi.
i may be out of line to say this but it seems to me the only ones going to be allowed to win in china are the chinese companies. But please everyone else bring in your technology, let us have access to it, then fail as we promote our 'own' that is 'surprisingly' a lot like what you brought in....

Why are tech sites even the anti apple ones rank them as the highest rated phone? Somebody from PCWorld, PCMag, ComputerWorld, eWeek should just rank all the smartphones (android, bb, iphone) and put the iphone at the bottom of the heap where it belongs. Why? It doesn't have the features I want.

What do you propose? Western nations have traditionally had open borders, there's no way to stop foreigners coming in and taking technology back home and reverse engineering it. The only thing to do is to keep lobbying them to improve their legal system, so companies whose designs are stolen have legal recourse. We're not going to close our borders and change our open way of life because of a few crooked Chinamen.
It really is amazing that someone who seems very technically astute doesn't understand why Apple is the most successful technology company in the world.
The Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad use the A4 chip and advanced battery technology to produce long battery life, beautiful graphics and high speed operation. The release of the iPad using this technology allows 10 hours of operation with a beautiful 10" display.
Regarding Flash, it is obsolete. How many Android phones run flash? What is the battery life of the ones that do. Adobe is attempting to redesign it while the rest of the industry will switch HTML5.
The iPhone has superior graphics, battery life, applications (Apple checks their applications for virus' et al) it's operating system is faster and easier to use (which is not a fault) and those are the reasons are why it is so successful. Yes Apple designs their products so that technically challenged people can use them. The iPad has shown that Autistic kids take to it, so do older people who have difficulty using a computer.
I guess you hate Apple so much that you still yes a Walkman or maybe a Zune. I wonder what Android phone you have? Does it even have Flash?
Hewlett Packard is introducing a tablet, only 7" size. It's battery life is only four hours. Microsoft cancelled their tablet and started a development with ARM to produce a low power chip like the A4. When Samsung saw the iPad they cancelled their tablet and started from scratch. Apple simply is the most well run technology company and their products prove it.
I am glad everybody has the opportunity to get an ip4 but where I live in Canada people are still queing up at 6am every morning outside the Apple Stores 7 weeks after they arrived. My local Rogers store has a waiting list of 150 people and they get at the most 10 phones per week. Same story all over town.

Elmer Dewitt in Forbes is reporting that the pre order number is up to 200,000. The 50,000 order number is the number of reorders on the first day of pre orders. I would say with this in mind, having more than a thousand show up and wait in line is a good number.
I wonder if Apple will report first day sales numbers for China? My guess is we will hear a number reported from Apple if they exceed expectations.
This is completely off topic, but FYI: archeological evidence is no longer really needed for this point. We have genomes for us and them, and we are essentially a single, interbreeding species. Ethnic Europeans and Asians share Neanderthal genes.

Apart from the status that comes from having the genuine article in a sea of counterfeits and clones, there are obviously plenty of people in China willing to pay that price.
