This is not true. The 11.5" is diagonal, meaning the width would be more like 9" or 9.5". The current Wireless keyboard is about 11" wide.
I would bet Steve will reference how it isn't any smaller than using the iPad as his excuse.
Not only do I disagree with your
"loose" geometry, I have to believe that Steve Jobs gave the directive:
"Engineer it as small as possible, while still providing a Full Size keyboard !!! "
I just measured my Apple Wireless Keyboard, from edge to edge of the actual keys. It's 10.75 inches wide AND the current dimensions of the Macbook Air are 12.8 inches wide.
If you lopped off an inch on each side, The NEW Air could still support a full size keyboard.
THIS is what you will see on Wednesday. !!!
ADDED: Wow, and lookey here ...at the picture above.

Sorry, but you forgot that screens have bezels.
A 16:9 screen would have a width of 10.1 inches. Add 0.5 inches to each side for the bezel and you are at 11.1 inches and the keyboard fits.
A 16:10 screen would have a width of 9.8 inches. Add 0.5 inches to each side for the bezel and you are at 10.8 inches and it would be close, but they could probably fit it in.
The new MacBook Air is great news and much anticipated.
I hope it will be a MacBook Pro without the DVD drive more than a Netbook. (Apple's Netbook is the iPad.) If early specs are right, then Apple has listened to feedback very well:
- More ports, better connectivity
- Longer battery life
- Larger hard drives plus SSD
- More powerful processors
- Lighter weight
They've taken their time with this upgrade, so it isn't just a refresh (obviously). A lot of people thought this machine was defunct in a world ruled by the IPad. Clearly, it isn't.
For me, one major test will be whether this machine is capable of being your only computer. Can't wait to see it in the flesh (metal).
Sorry, sorry, I shouldn't mention the "N" word here
Long ago, and I mean in the 1990s, there was a category of laptops that were either called "ultra-portables" or sometimes "sub-notebook". They were all distinguished by their design, which put a priority on weight savings and portability. Some did not have full-sized keyboards. Others were thin and ditched optical drives, spare battery bays. And they were often expensive. I used to own a number of Toshiba, Sony & IBM Thinkpads that fell into these categories.
How is that different from a netbook? Netbooks are cheap, dirt cheap laptops. Netbooks aren't about size: they're about price. The original Asus didn't even have Windows (it used Linux) to save money. That is not the mission of the MacBook Air.
Since when does the word netbook describe nothing except a computer under 12"?
Netbook is an entire category of device with several common attributes.. all of which are compromise and limitation: screen, processor, graphics, battery, keyboard. All funked.
A recent analysis of the photo conducted over the weekend also appears to corroborate this claim.
A USB socket is 13mm wide not 12mm (see port on the wired keyboard) so the back dimension is 284mm = 11.2". The side is 8.1" so the diagonal size is 13.8". Subtract 1/4" bezel from each corner and you get a 13.3" diagonal screen. You can see this by matching up the sockets on an 11.6" netbook:
and matching the slot for opening the lid between the old and new ones:
IMO there is no 11.6" MBA and never will be. The above picture clearly shows a 13.3" laptop and those components would not fit into an 11.6" machine. The only way they could build an 11" model would be to remove the GPU and use an i-series chip and (assuming they use 4gbit RAM chips) half the number of the chips to reach 2GB RAM.
But there would be no benefit in making an 11.6" machine. It won't be cheaper because it uses the same components as the 13" one.
Is it just me or do the batteries look like they have just been thrown in there? I would think that Apple would have them all the same width apart and straight. I can see them being offset but not all higgledy-piggledy looking!
If this is indeed a 11.6" notebook; the Bluetooth keyboard is about 11.1" wide. The previous MBA had a bezel of about .84" on each side of the screen. If the 11.6" screen has a similar size bezel, it would mean the screen (at 16x10 ratio) is roughly 9.8" wide by 6.2" tall, add .84" on both sides and you get about 11.48" total width. That would preserve the width of the existing Bluetooth keyboard and make perfect sense.
If an 11.6" MBA is in the works for release, I'd love to see some iOS cross-over. I'm not sure if touch screen interface would make sense in a notebook, but we have seen rumors of Apple experimenting with touch UI in OS X. Even if it just has iOS app support i'd be happy. As in previous AI posts, I'd really like to see this 11.6" device be priced around $899 (since the posts claim that the price will be 'significantly cheaper' than the current MBA). If it were more expensive than the current Plastic Macbook, I think that it will still deter many people from purchase. But if it is around a Grand (i.e. $999 or $1099), by nature, there will be a LOT of early adopters and it may be a mute point.

Again, the timeframe of this photo would be of an early prototype (maybe the EVT stage) which is probably using off-the-shelf batteries. It would be reasonable to expect Apple to have a custom battery molded to the available space for the final production design.

Apple has made a full size keyboard in a laptop with a smaller footprint before, the Powerbook G4 12 inch. Odds are, the new rumored 11.6 inch Air will look similar around the keyboard, with the newer chicklet design of course.
There's probably no better mac apple has created than this one. I got mine used a few years ago, and I am so sad it's nearing eol for me. I was about to buy an air, literally stopped in the last minute, a week ago, so I hope this upgrade is worthwhile.
I have no doubt an 11.6" notebook from Apple will have a full-size keyboard. I'm more concerned that it have a decent size trackpad! That's one good reason for the screen to be 16:10 instead of 16:9. I've used a netbook for a couple of years and my only real gripe is with the small trackpad. I'm about ready to replace it with an Apple designed mini laptop if the price is right.

I bet your trackpad had buttons. There's some extra space right there.

So, we will get a Apple Netbook?
Sorry, sorry, I shouldn't mention the "N" word here
wouldn't call it a netbook since it doesn't use one of those under powered Atom CPU.
Other than the screen size, it is a full-fledged laptop computer.
They don't want to cannibalize MacBook or iPad sales. It'll be a niche latte-sipping iLife trendy BS POS, not a practical tool like the HP Mini.
Meanwhile there are plenty of netbooks with good screens and nice keyboards you can easily hackintosh

Unfortunately, Apple is going to make this way too expensive.

You mean the one running an atom processor?
Best

Yeah it's like all the haters suddenly went full retard.
this is just a notebook with the same internals, but smaller thinner.

Please apple make it right this time.
"Micro Displayport"? Yet another new display connector from Apple?
Just a typo.
