    It already does.

You ought to read the book "The Choice", it might be rather enlightening.

    I'll check it out thanks.

Great. Now TELL US WHAT IT IS FOR!

And I better hear 'MobileMe' in that statement.

Seriously ... You have to read Richard K Morgan's trilogy on this subject.

THe iBookstore doesn?t have any of his books, or any books I look for. I have bought it on Kindle app for my iPad. While I?ll likely read it before the end of the year, I am not accustom to reading fiction.

Ha ha you and my dad both! I eventually got him to try a fiction book ... in his case Cat's Cradle and before he knew it he was hooked on Vonnegut at least. If you didn't already look here is the wiki on RKM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Morgan_(author)

It was very different and took a little getting into but once in I was in! The concept is exactly what you were discussing and then some! I used audio books on my iPod on the beach

They had the trilogy as a set? Altered Carbon is the first one.

$30/hour? In NYC try north of $50...

They probably will build more data centers in locations across the globe. But the laws about having data only stored in your own country will eventually have to change because the nature of cloud computing will become similar to how a disc array works. Your data will be mirrored and copied to places only the software will know, with bits scattered across multiple data centers. The feds might oppose it but I don't think they can prevent it. In the US, the only point at which the they can legally listen in is at the first datacenter hop. They are allowed to snoop the packets but not the stored contents of a hard disk without a subpoena.

If you go back and read the original article from the local newspaper in Maiden, NC, you will see that the re-zoning request specified "Data Center and Call Center".

I'd say Apple is about to hire a bunch of locals for a call center (possibly to take advantage of the East coast's earlier slot in the time zones). Hourly pay rates in NC might be lower than CA or TX.

I think it's quite obvious it's not. That would run on relatively few servers, not a billion dollar fortress.

I can't think of much other than (a) massive personalized streaming media. Not multicast, unicast; or (b) 'cloud' - I hate that word, it's a bloody networked server farm - storage.

My guess is both. Apple's getting heavy into media, and the devices are getting smaller. I think we'll see a push for small, convenient networked devices like the iPad tethered back to datacentres for their storage. Effectively a portable device with unlimited storage resources. For it to work, networks, especially in North America, have to become radically better: I bet Apple's gonna being lighting a lot of dark fiber.

I wonder if there'll finally be a decent Xserve update coming out of this. Maybe Apple will smarten up and put 4 drives in it this time, so people will buy it. A server's useless without RAID 10 for many applications.

The extra space is for a bunch of basket ball courts, that's what Barack and Steve were discussing yesterday.

Yeah, but I think the idea is that most of your data won't be on your Mac anymore. And your apps were bought from the online App Store, so no need to worry on that score Therefore, there's actually less need for you to back anything up... which is what you wanted in the first place, eh?

Let me see if I have this right:

You are linking to an article that points to Google's financial machinations moving income around overseas ("Google has built a complicated international structure that sends most of its overseas profits to the tax haven of Bermuda" in order to avoid high US tax rates!) and through various loopholes to pay lower taxes is evidence that the Obama administration is lowering taxes across the board in the US, providing the biggest tax breaks in the US since the 30's and stimulating the US economy?!?!

Are you in some alternate universe or something?

Yeah- the day when I can save 200gb of video in realtime to a cloud computing service the MacBook Air will become an attractige option for me - the high-end user.

Wow, that is mind boggling! It seems totally out of character or at least the character of the good citizen Google seems to put out there.

Just to be clear and I am not taking a side here ... you think it is ok that a corporation pays less tax as a % of income than a teacher?

I am 100% sure that Apple understands the need for redundancy. It's more likely, in my opinion, that in the course of speculation, we are either completely off base or missing some facts, or both.

Until the rest of Apples' competition agrees to manufacture "at home", Apple has no other option but to stay where it is .... sad but true.
