I agree with just about everything in your post except the above. Comparing the iPad to the Kindle tells us very little about screen-size preferences since they are a different class of devices both in terms of feature set and price.
Yes a different class of machine which is sort of my point. People dismiss 7" class machines far to fast. The size can be far more portable and user friendly. It depends upon the use of course but that again ties in with the class of machine. Just as a Touch gets used differently than an iPad so would a 7" device.

At any rate, I will not be particularly surprised if Apple introduces a smaller format iPad.
Niether would I. However they might get pushed in that direction when 7" machines demonstrate success.
Really the thing I want to address is the people that speak in absolutes. This idea that Apple will never do something is often very irritating. Maybe a 7" iPad isn't in the cards, I really don't know Apples plans, but I do expect iPads in different sizes sometime in the future.

I really think that comes from the impression held by some that everything Apple does comes fully-formed from an omniscient Steve Jobs. Jobs is incredibly gifted as a marketer with great instinct but it is a hugely disrespectful to not acknowledge the very large and talented supporting cast.

I imagine Apple as a place if I went to work there everybody would be far smarter than me. Steve does acknowledge this talent when he can. Of course everybody ignores the failures that Apple has promoted over the years. Great leadership though.

Yep, Steve does acknowledge the talent and yet people still think everything comes from Steve. He must be the ultimate multi-tasker.
Known Apple Psychic and new nappy changer (albeit babies nappies) Sir Elton has dropped a hint that he will be able to skype using the new ipad come april.
