By the way at a liberal arts college ( like the one I work at ) most students are shocked when they can't make more than $30,000 a year with a BA. What the're not seeing is that even if this isn't their " Glamour job " they don't have to start at the bottom fliping burgers or what not. So most go back to get a masters. It's very unusual to see someone walk into a $60,000 a year job after only 4 years.

But, it does indeed happen. Most professions do start above teacher's salaries, especially in computer fields. Of course, we are more immune to bad economic times then others (though I could tell you some horror stories about teachers losing their jobs due to school board incompetence).
I would also point out that if one has a degree in "liberal arts" it generally nets a lower salary.
