Imagination is great. But unless you plan on changing the laws of Physics, you have to work within them. For a projector to be widely worthwhile, you need a certain amount of light, which is far more than the iPhone battery can provide. You may get a pale image in a completely dark room with a perfect projection surface, but filling a wall with a compelling image for an audience? Not so much.
Well, I'm glad you are not in the 'imagining' business.
But I know what you are saying and my 'thoughts' were not intended as any kind of prediction.
Quote:
So let your imagination work on laser diodes that approach the theoretical limit for efficiency, and combine that with some imagination on how you're going to increase the iPhone's battery capacity by at least an order of magnitude. And then spend some imagination on the practical implications dissipating that amount of energy -- heat and enough laser energy to start fires and blind people.
Live TV could be done with an app now if someone wanted to do it. iPhone with a projector that will look horrible on a wall? Yeah right. That's a BS feature that wanna-be phones will tack on no doubt. Apple won't anytime remotely soon. The quality isn't close to worthwhile yet.
Apple can't do a 3G/3GS like update anymore. Competition is catching up and they will have to do an iPhone 4 like leap every year on design and features.
Apple could skip putting out a new phone in 2011 and stick with AT&T and still keep up with Android in sales. If they put iPhone 4 out on all U.S. carriers, they could smoke Android through 2012 easily on just the iPhone 4. Don't kid yourself into believing that more than a small segment of the population really cares about all the crazy hardware updates. Apps are everything, style and usability are next, and no one beats Apple at that.
somehow I doubt Apple would put a projector in iPhone.
unless it's totally different than what we think it's for.
It's Google Ad Sense taken to the next level. The microphone listens, the camera records images and the projector keeps projecting tailored ads. These phones will be completely free from Apple due to the ad and other services revenue, it'll break the need for carrier lock-in, and cause a world-wide ban on iPhones in movie theaters and elsewhere. Apple will take Nokia's place in both the most used smartphone brand and the smartphone brand that annoys customers the most.
My business would boom. Even if it only projected for 30 min, that's more then enough time to design a sales presentation, or a portfolio presentation, or show someone your website on a wall... man it would be crazy cool.
Imagine being able to present information anywhere, on any surface.
Lots of you have no imagination and are only thinking that it would suck to play movies on... but there are endless possibilities for something like this.
This is exactly the type of feature that would bring designers back to the Mac and show that Apple still cares about the publishing industry.
instead of adding a projector to the iphone, they should add a propper battery that lasts at least twice as long! who needs a projector? and what sense does it make to have a low light picture of a video on a wall and a drained battery 25 minutes later?
Why does the strength of a competing OS platform mean Apple has to make a significant hardware update? What software-based killer feature do you think Android and its third-party developers are going to come up with in the next six months that Apple would have to respond to with a "significant" hardware update?
BUSHMAN4 probably believes that Apple is driven by their competitors. If Steve Jobs ran his companies by looking in his rearview mirror, the world would never have the 128K Mac, the NeXT, Toy Story, or the iPhone and iPad. Steve looks ahead, not at who's chasing him.

The most recent picoprojectors, are still larger as an iPhone consume a terrible amount of battery, have a horrible image quality and use to sit on shelfs for almost eternity until some geek feels sorry for it and buys it all the same. Noway this it entering the iPhone, unless there has been a mind boggling technical revolution, of which nobody is awaer yet. Lets talk about this again in 5 years.
Near field communications chip is probably a given considering it already has a precedent in the japanese market that Apple can learn from. Live TV over the air would be amazing for commuters because it wouldn't chew up your data, though the world is moving towards on-demand television and podcasts are already great for this purpose. Not interested in the pico projector.

of course! and we are all business men and present things every day. and such little projector is of course a perfect quality to show to your clients - in the total dark...?
if you want a pico projector, then buy one and plug it to your iphone!
The pico projector is coming, maybe not in the iPhone 5, but in the long run, it will be a useful feature. Just like video conferencing was lame until apple figured out how to implement it simply and painlessly.
yes, veeeeery simpel! BOTH have to be on wifi and both need an iphone!
the truth is, that facetime is only interesting to try it out once. in reality, it is totally unnecessary, because if you are at home, you will probably have your mac book switched on with skype. and if you are outside your home, you don't have wifi anyway.

I doubt they would do it, unless it would work well (be bright and not suck the battery dry).
The title of this story implies a likelihood that seems horribly off-base to me.
This is precisely the type of thing I expect competitors to try though. It's a focus on what's possible rather than on meeting "unknown" future needs. Attempting to understand those needs drives iPhone future development.
New iPhone tech should provide new opportunities for developers.
RFID
HD TV/radio reception
3D cameras/screens
Stylus capability
Near screen detection
Infrared I/O
Any of these capabilities could be exploited and combined in novel, unimagined ways.
Apple had a patent once for a type of adaptive projection that used cameras to adjust the projected image to compensate for a non-flat, non-uniform colored surface.
Personally, I would love to see a laser based pico-projector on an iphone that might allow for using "lasers" (Dr. Evil finger quotes) to collect distance information. The augmented reality possibilities alone are intriguing.
Now this would be really cool. However, your absolutely correct; Apple cares a lot about aesthetics and that's what sets them apart. You wouldn't find a long antenna coming out from their device.
However, they may figure out an ingenious way to make it work! Like an inbuilt tuner, take FloTV for example, it doesn't require antenna's and neither does the SlingBox.
Regardless, I'm very much interested in Apple's future devices. I wrote an article on a planned design for either a future ipad or mac at.
Why bother to shoehorn in a battery-sucking, poorly projecting technology when they can already throw the image to an airTunes enabled pico, pocket, portable, or office projector and take on none of the power requirements.

No thanks - not my line of work. But you might.
Agree..

You're Apple, not one of those bulky, plasticy Android phone makers.

oh btw: a MUST SEE with steve jobs: http://youtu.be/0FW-lrMXLBE
