The truth is that most software that was cracked and pirated would not have been bought by these people in the first place.
I'm not trying to "attack" your post, but I don't think anyone of us can say, with certainty, what the "truth" is. Personally, I think just the opposite, that most people who steal do so for personal gain .... not just because they can. \
It's the same model as iTunes - any song you can buy on iTunes is available for free on a dozen other pirate channels, but that hasn't stopped iTunes becoming the dominant way for people to buy legitimate music.
I agree completely. One only has to remember what it was like "back in the day". When our family got our first computer, a purple iMac, my daughters favorite color, it used to be a real challenge to obtain software for it. We'd go into a Best Buy type retailer and look with envy at the row after row of "PC" software and not see any Mac software at all. Even when we went to the store that sold us the computer, they would only have a limited supply of Mac software. You might find the usual suspects ... Adobe and MS Office .... even QuarkXPress, you know, all that $1000.00 plus stuff .... but hardly anything to do with Desktop Publishing for more reasonable prices .... and I could not justify spending those prices for what was, essentially, a hobby.
So, out of necessity, I, like many others, turned to copying software from my friends. It wasn't until more reasonable software became easier to find that I started to switch over to "legitimate" software.
Skip forward to today ... a new Mac user can go to (an easy to find and use) app store and purchase just about any type of software they want. I think, if I were Adobe or any of the other "big boys", I'd be plenty worried right about now. No longer will a new user have to "steal" or buy an overpriced (for the non professional) piece of software that allows them to pursue (and learn by doing) desk top publishing, or any other avenues of interest. It's a great time to be part of the Mac Experience. Thank you Steve Jobs and to all at Apple. ...

Oh man... all this junk! And these crazy prices. Bejeweled 3 for $19?? What are they thinking?? It's like 20x the price of the iPhone version of Bejeweled 2.
Bejewled 3 was released by Popcap just before Christmas. It is a brand new app and costs $20 on the Windows side too. It was not included in their holiday 50% off sale sadly heh.
As people in opposition of piracy love to jump to lofty, unfounded conclusions, I would now like to state for the record that this conclusively proves that Piracy = Sales.
That's the most laughable and stupid conclusion that I have ever heard of. Angry Birds is selling well ... because it's a great app .... not because it's "available" to be stolen ........ thanks for making me spill the last of my coffee.
Not quite. The copy/paste cracks are the developers' faults but in the article, it says they have cracked Apple's security. That would mean every single app will be cracked at once but ultimately they can all be reverse-engineered from the assembly code. Up until now, most apps get security through obscurity - by implementing different authentication methods. If they all use the same one and it gets cracked, free apps for all. I suspect given that the App Store came with an OS update that the validation may be deeper into the OS and if so would require custom system files. That might be easy in the short term but keeping patching the system is not something most people want to do. Hopefully Apple has put the authentication low-level enough.
I must have read this differently. What I thought it said was that a certain sub-set of developers didn't follow Apple's guidelines and can their apps be "hacked" by giving them any application receipt as opposed to a receipt that is specific to their app. And as was pointed out earlier, the app would have to come from somewhere other than the app store in the first place. I'm not sure how you got that Apple's authentication system was flawed or broken. It looks like to me that a few coders were lazy or ignorant. Not really that much of a story to be honest.
Edit: I re-read and I can see now that you were saying that someone claims to have broken the system in addition to the developers screw-up. However, I'm not sure I believe the hacker's claim at this point, but that remains to be seen.
Piracy is illegal and wrong, the people who create should benefit financially from their hard work.
Next time you pirate, let me go to your HR dept. and get some of your money transferred to my bank account. Its okay, you worked for it, but I am allowed to steal it just like you did.
