He did, though he may have been overstating the case. I do recall it was about a billion, though I no longer have their 10Ks from then.

Whether it was 90 days, six months or a year, it doesn't matter if you're burning through it.

    TOUCHE !

Same here, i despise everything M$, and if wasn't for that rubbish that I have to use at work, not a single disgusting molecule of this crap would permeate my fingers.

I long for the day that it files for bankruptcy.

Yep too true, if Billie Gate's mummy did not lend him the money to purchase it then just think how better the world would be folks.

By the way I am a computer programmer, i don't think Gate's is, but correct me if I am wrong.

They are all leaving because of Ballmer. They see his narrow vision and self inflated ego and know that there is no way for them to break through that. They are all looking out for their own interests and Ballmer is a road block to any success for M$.

I, for one, love it. I relish in the fact knowing that Ballmer will run M$ into the ground and look forward to that day. He is the biggest douche to ever walk the halls of a company like M$.

Of course, this is just my 2 cents....

The entire online services division continues to be a financial black hole as well, however it has paved the way for a bunch of supporting online services, for the cloud to be baked into Windows 8 and things like Office365 which will be a revenue stream for Microsoft when the days of the traditional PC stronghold are over.

So a Microsoft focused just on traditional Windows/Office probably would have made more money, right up until the point where they didn't because the market moved past them. At least with all of the bomb projects a few catch on and offer growth potential when the traditional Server/Windows/Office cash cow dries up.

I think some of these other initiatives could have been pursued, but would have needed to be done more on an enterprise basis. Fewer black holes, fewer projects that require massive sunk costs before showing a profit. Anybody who follows the tech world and Apple in particular has to worry about the potentially corrosive effect of having so much cash flow that any way of spending it seems wise. Microsoft has been the poster child for that. Maybe if they'd been leaner, they would have been meaner.

Yes he was. He and Paul Allen wrote the altair BASIC interpreter that fits in just 4k of memory, without actually having an actual Altair system to test and debug with. Although you could argue which one of the two was the more prolific one, since it was Allen who wrote the emulator they developed the program in, and finished a critical piece of the software on the flight to demo it.

Microsoft's success is largely attributable to a string of lucky circumstances that they parlayed into a giant monopoly, and I think Gates' reputation as a tech genius is highly exaggerated -- he was much more of a completely ruthless and unprincipled businessman of the robber baron school -- but he was a programmer at the beginning of his career, which more or less started with a Basic interpreter he and Paul Allen created for the Altair.

When Steve Jobs takes a leave, Apple stock loses shares. If Ballmer were to leave, the stock would skyrocket.

What I'm worried about is that microsoft is confusing a leadership problem with a culture problem. It doesn't matter how good your officers are if the entire corporate heirarchy is designed to encourage balkanization and infighting. It is even worse when the overarching corporate strategy seems so out of touch with reality and any dissent is viewed as rebellion. This is a problem that is bigger than Ballmer, although he certainly isn't helping. What microsoft needs is not just good leadership or vision. Microsoft also needs a culture of excitement, enthusiasm and genuine experimentation.

I don't care much for Microsoft's products for the most part and have been a long time Mac/Linux/BSD user. That being said, this is not a particularly well informed comment. Gates has an IQ of around 160. That means he is not simply a "tech genius", he's an actual genius. This puts him at about the same intelligence level as Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking.

Even with that in mind, he started programming at 13, troubleshooting profession code at 14, and writing software for his high school shortly after that. He probably has more technical ability in his little finger than most of the people on these forums have in their entire body.

The man did not arrive at his current station by way of accidents. He was poised to take advantage of situations that many people may have been able to perceive, but no one else was able to respond to with his efficiency. There is a reason that under his leadership Microsoft has dominated the OS market for the length of time they have. I'm all for well placed criticism, but trying to downplay what Gates accomplished and pushed others to accomplish seems a bit silly... \

Well said. I don't worry about Microsoft so much, as I worry about a contagion affect.

The following is an email from a genius? I think not.

Subject: Windows Usability Systematic degradation flame

I am quite disappointed at how Windows Usability has been going backwards and the program management groups don't drive usability issues. Let me give you my experience from yesterday.

I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ... so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there. The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up.

This site is so slow it is unusable. It wasn't in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45. These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C: \\Documents and Settings\\billg\\My Documents\\My Pictures seem clear. They are not filtered by the system ... and so many of the things are strange.

I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing. So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist? So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated.

They told me to go to the main page search button and type movie maker (not moviemaker!).

I tried that. The site was pathetically slow but after 6 seconds of waiting up it came. I thought for sure now I would see a button to just go do the download.

In fact it is more like a puzzle that you get to solve. It told me to go to Windows Update and do a bunch of incantations. This struck me as completely odd. Why should I have to go somewhere else and do a scan to download moviemaker?

So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes. Doesn't Windows update know some key to talk to Windows? Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff.

This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg. So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn't use it for anything else during this time.

What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished. Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night -- why should I reboot at that time? So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state.

So I got back up and running and went to Windows Update again. I forgot why I was in Windows Update at all since all I wanted was to get Moviemaker. So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called WindowsXP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP.

What does it mean to have to click on that folder? So I get a bunch of confusing stuff but sure enough one of them is Moviemaker. So I do the download. The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes. Amazing how slow this thing is. At some point I get told I need to go get Windows Media Series 9 to download.

So I decide I will go do that. This time I get dialogs saying things like "Open" or "Save". No guidance in the instructions which to do. I have no clue which to do. The download is fast and the install takes 7 minutes for this thing. So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there. It is not there.

What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3. Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable.

This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up. But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information.

What an absolute mess. Moviemaker is just not there at all. So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package. I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself. I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed.

I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again. So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package.

The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11 (don't you just love that root certificate message?) When I really get to use the stuff I am sure I will have more feedback.

IQ is not really a matter of opinion, but you can think whatever you want. His score is widely known and available from a number of sources more reliable than AppleInsider. Anything over 140 is in the genius range.

First of all, I said he wasn't a tech genius, simply or otherwise. You can choose to see his "accomplishments" in whatever light you wish, but, in my opinion, they are based on a huge amount of luck, and the ruthlessness to take advantage of that luck in the way few people would, and leverage it to the fullest extent possible: his business abilities, not his technical abilities.

It's also entirely meaningless to establish him as a tech genius, since that isn't what IQ measures.

That was not the measure I used to support his technical genius. The part that did that has not been responded to at all. If you look back at my actual reply to you I think you will see that element is covered in the second section... you know... the one where he was able to write software for his high school... when he was in high school... after debugging commercial software for them... \

Sorry, that doesn't establish him as a tech genius either. What would, would be some actual tech genius accomplishments, which we don't really see in his career. What we do see is a history of ruthless, unethical, and sometimes illegal business practices that established him as what he is.
